Hello. I'm currently a junior who received a 2250 in October (730 CR, 770 W, 750 math). I'm an Asian American and will be majoring in English. I feel like I underperformed slightly on my first SAT. Is it worth my time to retake it for a 2320+? Will the adcoms view this negatively? I've heard that Yale looks down upon applicants who focus too much on standardized tests. Will retaking make a difference, or should my time be spent elsewhere?

I didn’t retake a 2260, even though I did better on the PSATs (2300). I guess it depends on how confident you are that you will do better - for me, I knew that I often get nervous on standardized tests and will therefore always make some stupid mistake (like filling in the wrong circles :().

retake it!! i had a 2250 on my first take also, and just like you, my combined M + CR was under 1500 (mine was 1490). I didn’t really want to retake it, but my college counselor suggested it. I didn’t study at all (I took it 3 days before AP tests began haha), and I got a 2400 (1-sitting) on my second take.

There’s 150 more points out there for you to get, so you might as well take it once more…even if you don’t get a 2400, you’re likely to raise 1 or more of your scores.

since you have only taken it once, I would definitely retake it if I were you. i retook a 2230 that i got as a junior and scored much higher as a senior in october

Good luck! Don’t worry too much about it, just go in with a clear head and use logic =)

if you think you can do better. I’m upset that I have no more chances to retake my 2200 (as a senior) but I need to focus on my SATIIs for January. don’t wait like I did or you may miss out.

I guess this is somewhat relevant (and sorry to hijack)

Would it “look better” for me to take the SAT I for the third time and try to get a higher score (2160 superscored currently) with SAT II scores of 700/750 or should I leave my SAT I score as it is and take a third SAT II for a score of 750+?

@powerbomb it depends on your major i guess. If you’re going into say english & haven’t yet taken the Lit SATII, go for that & get a high score. It’ll help balance out your SATI’s but not make up for them. Same w/ engineering–take MathII & a science & aim high for those. If your SATIIs already reflect your major/capabilities, retake the SATI

I have a 750 in US and a 700 in Math II - I want to study international affairs/government.

I really don’t know what to do. A 2160 isn’t bad but it is by no means good. a 700 on math II isn’t bad either but everybody seems to get an 800 on that.

I’d give it a shot anyway. you might be surprised. I retook & went up in everything. even went up 50 pts in writing w/o studying that section whatsoever

Lol. Well, to the OP, I retook a 2270, and I managed to get a 2380. The only score in that second test that i did not have an 800 in was in math (Pretty ironic because I consider myself to be WAY better at math than at reading and writing.).

If you think you can do better on the next SAT, then go for it. There’s a risk, but then there’s a risk for every event. Good luck!

Since you are a first semester junior and got a 2250, I would say retake it if you have the means ONLY if you actually think you can do better. I, however, do think that you can do better the second time around because A) you know what to expect, B) you’re older and C) you should be less stressed. However, I do not think it is absolutely necessary. I got a 2250 as well (720 CR, 740 W, 790 M) and got in. However, our circumstances are not the same and I don’t know how differently our 2250 might be seen.
