Is it worth it to retake or not?

ACT
Highest Composite: 30
English: 33
Math: 31
Reading: 23
Science: 31
Writing: 8

Will retaking for a much more well-rounded reading score be worth it? Also, especially since I'm applying Early Decision for schools like Northwestern (It's a reach, I know) and priority for U of I Urbana Champaign (also slight reach, lol), will they accept the October ACT results if I'm applying by November 1st and my application will also be submitted already?

Also, suggestions for Reading strategies? I'm confident I can hit at least a 30 in English, Math, and Science now. If I can get my Reading around there, I'll be happy.

Thanks.

Personally, I would say retake it. And sense you’re asking for strategies, I get the impression you really want to retake it, anyway ;).

Research your school’s testing policies; from what I’ve seen, most allow you to send the score in about a month or so later than the rest of your application (LOOK THIS UP. It should be on the website).

Reading Strategies (I got a 31 and a 30): depends. Was your problem the comprehension or the timing (I personally find 35 minutes to read 4 rather long passages AND answer 40 questions is utterly ridiculous. But that’s just me.) Either way, the best advice will always be to PRACTICE. Practice against the clock if that’s your weakness, or practice really trying to focus on the meaning of the passage (write notes to yourself as you go along; that always helps). People tend to say that Reading comprehension is the hardest score to get up, but I BELIEVE IN YOU.

Good luck, with whatever you choose =).

Yeah, I do really want to retake it, and I’d like to think it’s the timing that trips me up as opposed to comprehension (since I’m in an AP English class). It’s just that English, Math, and Science are so question-oriented and sort of point me in the right direction. Whereas Reading confuses me because there’s soooo much to do all at once. I end up just panicking more than anything else, resulting in a score I’d say is way lower than my ability level.

Your strategies of writing in the margin seems to be a recurring theme I’m getting from people who score high on the Reading - that and reading super fast and blazing through the questions (which really isn’t a strategy, it’s what they want you to do, lol) - so I’ll try that.

Also, that made me feel so much better when you said you believe in me. I could just hug you! Thanks! ;D
