i know many community colleges offer Associate's degrees and one of their main functions is to help transfer students to 4 year schools. Would anyone out there think its worth obtaining an AA degree before transfering? even if it takes an extra year to do so? I'd personally like to get an AA degree and transfer but i also wanna get a bachelor's degree to help out my parents as soon as possible. Any thoughts? advantages? disadvantages? opinions? Thanx.

I got an AA degree in three semesters. It wasn't that hard.

what title did u get ur AA in? also how did that work? did u attend a ceremony like in high school? or did a school official hand it to u personally? etc

Might as well get it as a filler for your future resumes.

You can get an AA in transfer studies by just completing IGETC at my CC (I'm assuming this would be the case for other CCs as well)

doesnt matter either way

just make sure you graduate with your BA

I agree with Gabe. Associates Degrees ain't worth the paper they printed on. Though the graduation ceremony for them is pretty sweet.

so lets see if i get this right so far:
advantages:
1. nice souvenier from ur cc
2. a good filler for future resumes
3. a good "back-up" degree incase BA studies go wrong (god forbid)
4. quick to complete depending on how short the requirements are
5. anything else....?

disadvantages:
1. Waste of time/$, since the main goal is transfer/BA degree
2.sweet grad ceremony
3......anything else?

Thanx guys/gals, all this info has helped me shape my viewpoints/decisions. From what you all are saying, it seems to me that i should stay primarily focused on the journey toward the BA. If i can pick up the AA on the way then go for it. Now my question here is, do you guys think it would be worth an extra year to get the AA. So basically spend 3 years at a cc instead of the traditional 2? a total of 5 years for ur undergrad overall?

Woah woah woah. Whatever you do, do not stay at your CC for an extra year to get an Associates. It won't be worth it. Trust me. Just get a minor once you are at your UC.

lol ok i'll take ur word for it cardinalf. yeah i probably wouldnt want to give my parents the bill for an extra year. In general, what type of majors usually have the fewest course requirements for an AA? originally i was hoping to transfer and get an AA in math/engineering/and business but the core requirements for those were just too much to fit in 2 years, in addition to the IGETC/TAG.

"Now my question here is, do you guys think it would be worth an extra year to get the AA."

No way! The AA degree is not worth that effort. Only do the AA degree if you have the time within the 2 year CC timeframe. It's not even worth it for you to stay back a single quarter/semester.

Your school as an AS in engineering?

AS in engineering? well, the school does offer an Associate's Degree in Engineering yes if thats what ur askin

screw the aa and just get the ba from ucla/ucb/ucsd. I think this will be more than enough.

EDIT: P.S. If anyone else talks about staying an extra year at a CC to get an Associates, I am reporting the post as offensive.

? cardinal focused, chill out, why would this discussion be offensive?

Hahah, I was jk...I just want to emphasize the point that its way not worth it...! haha, sorry.

haha ok ok, yeah i wondered why this would be offensive, maybe next time put "JK" in small print at the bottom of ur post. But anyway, yeah i trust ur opinion on not doin the 3rd year thing. reason i had that idea in my head is because i met a girl who in my calc class who's done that and she has 2 AA's and she's transfering.

Seriously, an AA is arguably not even worth taking one extra class for, let alone a whole YEAR!!!!

^ Wow, I've outposted you gabe. I didn't think I would ever catch up...yay

yeah, i sincerely thank both of u gabe/cardinal, you've convinced me to not spend more than 2 years at a cc. now that u mention it, i prolly cant even see myself a 3rd year there.......how dull...... Now i just gotta figure out which classes to take for the fall. thanx again! ^_^
