Is it worth it to transfer?

I'm currently a first-year at UVa thinking about a transfer to Georgetown SFS. It's not that I hate UVa or anything, in fact I like it and all the opportunities I see there. That's why wondering if I should transfer or not is really difficult. The problem is that I would really love to do the International History program they have at the SFS. I've read up on it and the courses they offer and I just really like the courses they have to offer.

I have a 3.4 GPA (it was pretty much one grade that killed it, the rest were A-s and As), which I know is very low for transfer prospects, and actually I was kind of relieved that I didn't have to think about it anymore. But I still wonder if I should just do it because I really want to pursue this program and why not, right? At the same time, though, I don't want to waste my time going through the transfer process if my chances were slim to none in the first place.

My high school GPA was pretty high; weighted it was over 4.0 (I want to say 4.5?) so I'm guessing unweighted it was 3.8 or something. My SAT score was not stellar, in the mid 1900s (I'm awful with standardized tests...) but my ACT was a 31.

My extra-currics were kind of skimpy in high school, and kind of in college as well, but I have been much more involved with my college extra curriculars than I had been in hs. I've also got some writing awards and awards from my school, but who knows if that means anything.

So... is it even worth it? Thank you so much for reading!

in short terms, my advice is yes.

so whats wrong with UVA/ you should be able to find enough international history stuff there. a lateral move like this is just waste of time and money.

Georgetown is a Jesuit University. Your EC’s must be intense and real, you cannot fake it. From this statement alone, not even looking at your stats, it is not the school for you.

@4Boston: I don’t really think I’m “faking” my ECs and I would very much appreciate it if you didn’t phrase what you’re saying like that. I was just someone who studied more in high school rather than joining a bunch of clubs; I’m not really a person who can do so many things at one time (I wish I were, though). I know what you mean, however, and you have a valid point.

@artloversplus: Yeah, your reasoning is what I’ve been telling myself! It is a lateral move so there is no point. But I’ve looked at the courses the SFS has to offer and I prefer them to UVa’s. I also prefer the DC location.

Sorry, I did not have to come off so strong to make the point. I just wanted you to think deeply about the decision. Quality EC’s may also more important than quantity. How it changes your life and the life of others. What would you bring to the school that will enrich all of college community is especially important at a Jesuit university. I think both schools are great. They were both serious choices for my son and both were visited.
