Hello! I’m currently a sophomore at a small liberal arts college outside my home state of Washington. Right now, I’m looking at a major in Biological sciences. My school was a great fit for me last year, but this year, not so much. I’m a bit tired of the town and the surrounding area in general, and the campus feels a little too small for me. The clubs and other social activities are not incredibly strong, and there is not much happening off campus either. I also don’t feel like I really “click” with the student body there (it is incredibly hipster) and many people at my school are interested in Politics and Gender Studies (though there still are science majors). The academics at my current school are fine, but aside from that, I’m honestly not very happy here. I want to go back to Washington and go to the University of Washington in Seattle. All of that sounds much more exciting, and I could picture myself being happier there. I especially like the wider variety of classes offered at UW than at my current institution, and the science programs there are stronger than the ones at my current school. The problem is, though, at UW, all of the science majors, especially Biology, are incredibly competitive, and I’m afraid I may not get in. My current school is pretty rigorous. I had a 3.0 GPA coming out of Freshman year (graduated from high school with a 4.06 weighted GPA), though so far this year, I have been getting better grades. However, at my current school, I am guaranteed a Biology major if I declare there.
My question is, should I stay at my current school, which is pretty selective, and major in Biology there and simply try to tough things out, or should I try to get into UW where I would be happier, and risk the chance of not being able to major in exactly what I want?
