I took the SAT and got a 770 on critical reading, which is a score that I am very happy with, however, because my math score is poor (560), I was wondering if it would be worth it to try to bring my critical reading score to an 800. I am planning on trying to get my math score to 650 +, but that still isn't an amazing score, so would a perfect CR score overshadow that? Or should I not even bother, and just focus my studying on raising my math score?
thanks

no matter how you do your CR will overshadow your M… and focus just on math. there’s still a possibility of getting an 800 without studying for it

770 is pretty much the same as a 800 if your math is not better…

I would have to agree with the posters above. Focus more on getting your math score up to a 650+.

Your reading and math scores reversed are my scores! LOL. Seriously, I totally envy your 770 on the CR. Trust me, math is pretty easy to improve if you just learn the basic concepts and get yourself to be familiar with the test format. You should definitely retake after relearning all the math concepts. (While you’re at it, can you tell me how you prepped for the CR section. I’m completely failing this section, especially the reading portion). T-T.

A 770 is three wrong. An 800 is two wrong. Once you’re in that range, there’s not a whole lot you can do. If you get the 800, great, but you should be focusing on math.

for math …just practice and practice and practice some more…the concepts aren’t that hard it’s just the distractors that bring your score down. i agree with andy, it’s a lot easier to improve on it and a 770 is pretty much like a 800 in CR…how did you do it anonymous??

Thanks guys, I will try to just focus on the math.
To andy and duke: to be honest, i was really surprised with the 770, because on my practice tests, i had been getting high 600s/low 700s…i was using kaplan, but in the real test, at least for me, the passages seemed easier, so i guess that was why. the vocab also was easier than the kaplan book i’d been using, so if you’re just using the college board book, i’d recommend kaplan or something else too. if you’re using another book, i guess i’d say that you shoudl outline each paragraph as you’re reading. that’s what i did. just quick summaries, really, so you have a basic idea of what each paragraph is saying. also underline key points, and in paired passages, do the qs for passage 1 before the qs for passage 2. also the CR questions aren’t in order of difficulty, so don’t assume the harder ones are at the end. read carefully, and remember that there’s only one answer that will work (according to college board, anyway). hope that helps somewhat.

also, do you think if i just use gruber’s (and the blue book) i can improve on the math section? thanks!

Hey!! I would still be dying for something in teh high 600s as my CR scores are always stuck in the 550-600 range. Anonymous, for the reading coprehension, I usually get to narrow down the answer choices to 2 choices, but then I can’t decide between the 2. What should I do in this case? Also, I’ve just started to use the BB for the CR practice tests. How EXACTLY should I go over the reading questions that I got wrong. I mean, there are questions that I thought were 100% correct but ended up being wrong. What should I do? BTW, don’t worry about math. I’d say that you’ll be able to rasie your score to around a 700 in about a month if you work hard!! Good luck!!

take this from a sophomore who received an 800 on math while receiving a 510 on CR. Math is all about practice and knowing concepts. The SAT Math portion doesn’t ask the same questions you had on your geometry tests but different. The SAT Math questions are tricky. There are kids taking AP Calculus that cant get full scores while they do good in AP Calculus. The questions are tricky and after solving a lot of SAT MATH questions you will understand the format, or the pattern rather, in the SAT MATH questions.

But I cant seem to find a solution for my CR problem which really disappoints me.
