Is it really worth it to do all this community service just to get into a school that isn't that much better than one that you could get into without your impassionate commnuity service?

no 10 chrs

Don't do community service just because it looks good, do it because you want to.

I do it because:

My school requires 20 hours per year

and

To get a Bright Futures Scholarship, I have to do over 75 hours.

Still, it's fun to volunteer, but it's hard to find the time to do it.

If you get paid, is it not community service anymore?

It is not. It's a job at that point.

My son did MINIMAL community service and was accepted at an Ivy. Chill.

Just curious, could you post your sons stats?

Math 800; CR 680; Writing 690; Math II 800; Physics 760; Chem 740

GPA: 3.939 weighted

Great recs

Three varsity sports; capt of one team

Make that AWESOME recs. His GC really went wild.

Thanks. Just that I don't have sports :(

You undoubtedly have other things. That's what makes you unique!

Hooray for math team!

And music. And art. And tutoring younger kids. And whatever else you've got!!!

Community service is very valuable to learn more about YOURSELF, your strengths & areas which need improvement. It helped me sort through future job options by seeing things you never see in the classroom & figure out what I'm good at & which things would make me crazy in an work environment. Volunteering gives you a great snapshop of different organizations & what they do for our community & society. Volunteering just to pad your app or resume will not get you nearly as much as if you look at the big picture.

At this point, math team is just about all I've got (I like to think I'm pretty good) , but I think I'm going to start tutoring at my elementary school.

Guess I don't know unitl I try. Should I start in the spring this year or wait until junior year?

If you're interested in doing something, there's rarely a good reason to wait.

Good point. I'm free for the next four days so I might as well pay a visit and ask about my options.

Community service, I hear, looks good to colleges. It's also a great way to give back to your community, meet new people, learn something new (and get some life experience) and to have fun with friends.

I highly recommend it.
