Hi everyone. Can you please give me your honest opinion or advice on how to approach this situation?

Okay...so I think WashU would be a great fit, but I received no FA or scholarships, making the high cost a major factor, especially in comparison to my state school (GA Tech, ~$5000 per year). I know money shouldn't be the determining factor, but when the difference is so big, I can't help but hesitate.

I visited WashU during one of its weekends, and I absolutely loved the campus and friendly environment. However, since I haven't done extensive visits to any of my other schools, I can't definitively say that I can't find that type of environment elsewhere.

By the way, I applied to the school of engineering (undeclared), if that makes any difference.

Coffeebean, No one can answer this question for you. I am assuming from the fact that WashU did not grant you any Financial Aid ,that your family is considered well-off enough to afford to pay your tuition. Is WashU a fabulous school academically with a great quality of life? Yes. Is it worth $160K? That is a question of family and personal priorites.

To give you an analogy, You can buy a KIA for $12,000 or a BMW for $75,000.
Both will get you where you need to go, but the mechanics, driving experience, design and real and perceived prestige are different. If you can afford the BMW, is it worth it? That too is a question of personal priorities.

Good luck in your decision and Congratulations on your acceptance to WashU!

It depends on your major. For example, if you want to major in Engineering, GA Tech has great reputation. Then there is no need to pay $30,000 per year more to go to WashU. But it really depends on your family's financial resources.

For engineering the cost difference is not justifyiable. You might enjoy your 4 years at WashU a little more but you 150K difference ? Set the money aside and use later for grad school.

I should probably add that I will most likely double major with Economics and minor in French, and I liked the flexibility WashU offers so that in case I hate engineering, I can still receive a good education in another area.

hmm...I just read over what I wrote, and it seems like I'm pushing for WashU myself. It's not intentional, I promise; I'm just trying to give a more complete picture of this situation.

For Economics/French the difference will be more significant. WashU added several star professors last year (in Econ), they are on their way into top 10 in that area.

I am in the same situation. My planned major is Biomedical Engineering. I loved my visit to Wash U and love the flexibility to select classes and change majors if necessary. However, I have been admitted to The University of Texas for Biomedical Engineering. Its my state flagship university and my family has a prepaid tuition voucher which covers a 4 year undergraduate education. What to do???
