Should I even bother applying to MSU now? I'm out of state also. With an 1800/2400 and 1140/1600 with a 26 ACT. Just wondering if it's too late for me to have a shot, since being OOS hurts your chances.

Yeah, it's always worth it.

What is your GPA?

Why do you want to go to MSU? (Real question, not attacking.) OOS does not hurt your chances that badly at all.

Eventhough I also heard being oos hurt your chances, it's always still better to apply. If all the students who applied ( and actually got in ) happen to didn't apply, many universities wouldn't be large as they are. If cost is a issue and there happen to be a school your more confident getting into, then that's different.

I'm not necessarily more confident at any other school, but for some reason i have always had this weird like urge to move to Michigan. The campus is beautiful, I honestly think I would love it there. But I feel like my GPA will hold me back, it's a 3.24. I had an illness early on in high school and it really put a damper on my grades-- I know, horrible excuse but it is true. My parents hate the idea of me going to Mich. but I truly would love it. So you think I should apply? Even though it's so late in the game?

I see why you have a urge for Michigan, it's the greatest State. A 3.24 is below their average, but not far off to make your application useless. I don't think it's too late at all to apply, it's just recommanded to apply before Nov 1st ( financial reasons etc...

Although since your GPA is a 3.24, if that's your weighted and your unweighted drops in 2.0's that may hurt chances. Also if you have a 3.24 and your courses seem to have been easy. Reguardless, since it seems like there is no financial issues applying to multiple schools, then applying shouldn't hurt.

Yeah, no 3.24 is my UW. My W is something like a 3.4 ish around there. I haven't taken necessarily easy courses, I stayed away from the "joke" electives, and then picked up honors spanish and honors english junior year and now AP Euro and honors english senior year. So you think I should go for it?

Yes, I think you should still apply. I'm not saying apply and you'll get accepted, more like you have a decent chance. I have a 3.7 unweighted myself, plan to apply to Michigan State University, and nervous as well I may not get accepted. Good part reguardless if you get accepted or not, you took the chance to apply. Then waiting years and wondering what would have happen if you did apply.

Yeah, I totally understand. Hate my GPA. It's totally killing me. If only I had some ridiculous connection to MSU haha that could get me in easy.

OOS is actually better than you think, MSU is only ~10% oos and they are trying to raise that. You actually have a good chance here, your scores are above their median by a bit and a 3.4 weighted is not as bad as you think (taking tough classes will help too).
Good luck.

Even this late in the game?

Yes, even now it's still worth it to apply if you want to go. You're not actually that late either. Some kids haven't even started applying anywhere yet.

memphist0 is right, 3.4 weighted plus your harder classes is not as bad as you think. Being OOS is also not too big of a disadvantage, especially this year. I think you have a good shot.

Alright, thank you. I really appreciate your help. Now it's time to just convince my mom to let me. She's so anti- Michigan it's ridiculous. I'm thinking if I pay for the app. fee she can't really complain.

Also, does any one know anything about the College of Arts and Letters or the College of Social Sciences? I'm looking to major in either History or American Studies, and I was wondering how MSU's program is.

bump, I'm hoping if I know enough about the programs it'll be a lot easier to convince my mom to at least let me apply. thanks!

What are your interests? More American politics? American History? World History? You might want to look into either James Madison or Residential College in the Arts and Humanities if you are interested in either politics or world history, respectively.

The university is great all the way around.

What is your mom worried about specifically?

I'm more into later American History/ European History as a whole. I just love History in general. I personally believe the University is great, it's gorgeous and cold (just the way I like it). My mom is tweaking because well, it's Michigan. She knows absolutely no one there and I think she thinks a smaller school would better fit me. You know, typically mother, acting like SHE is the one applying. I like small schools yes, but I want a school with the real college experience. The Big 10 football for one is a big push. She just doesn't want me that far away, coming from Virginia. My sister goes to Georgetown so she's nice and close, my mom expects the same from me.

Well, as for the large school, consider applying to one of the residential colleges that I mentioned. I was the same way, did not want a large school at all, but wanted the freedom to take a wide variety of courses. The small res college within the large university provided me with the best of both worlds. It's worth looking into.

Virginia is only about a 10-14 hour drive from East Lansing, so it's not like you're going cross-country. I live about an hour out of East Lansing and I make the trip to Williamsburg in about 10 hours (I have family there and I go about once a month), so again it's not too bad.

Plus, if you ever want to go to Europe to study European history, MSU has one, if not the, best study abroad programs in the country.

Ah, thank you for that fantastic argument I can use against my mom. Really appreciate that. How is applying to one of the small residential colleges different from applying to the University as a whole? Is it the same application, like the one on the website? Or is it separate.

Nope, same app. You just put down as your major whichever res college you would like to attend. Here are two of them:

Residential College in the Arts and Humanities
James Madison College

Good luck. Lemme know if you have any more questions.

Thank you so much. Do you know if applying to James Madison College gives one a better or worse shot at getting in? Or does it not affect it?
