is it worth taking honors math?

i'm debating on whether to take honors calc when i'm a frosh or not. is it almost impossible to get an A in these classes, and are they worth the effort?

Depends on how good you are. Some people would consider honors calculus easy. Heh heh heh.

Besides: "An honors version of Math 1B is shown in the Catalog, but due to budgetary constraints has not been given in recent years."

From what I've seen, if you're a good at theory and especially at proofs, then getting an A in honors math may actually be EASIER than getting an A in regular math. This is true for 2 reasons. #1, the curve in honors math tends to be substantially easier (to compensate for the better quality student in honors), and #2, the exams and problem sets are more theoretical and proof-oriented, as opposed to the standard problem-solving of regular math.

What I would say is this. If you are planning to major in math, then you should consider honors courses (if it is offered). Upper-division math courses are mostly about proofs and theorems, so those honors courses will give you a good indication of what the upper-division will look like, not to mention make you better at solving proofs. You may also want to consider honors if you want to get into other highly theoretical fields such as theoretical physics, theoretical computer science, or theoretical economics. But if you don't intend to get into those fields, then honors may not be right for you.
