is it worth the high price?

I applied to three architecture schools, and so far I only heard back from Syracuse. I didn't get much financial aid, my parents will still have to pay about $22,000 a year if I decide to attend.

After 5 years, I'll be deep in debt... is a B.Arch from Syracuse really worth it? Does the profession pay well? I know how hard the workload is going to be, and I'm fine with that. But I'm wondering if it pays off in the end. I don't want to spend the rest of my life paying off college loans.

So, current/future architects. Your opinions?

How much debt? Where do you plan to work? What are your other options? Waht sort of career do you envision?

about $120K when/if i graduate.

I plan to work in New York.

other options...? if i don't choose an architecture school, i'd probably go to art school (which i got into already).

career i envisioned? design firm.

Wait and see what other offers you get.

$120K is too much debt for a guy who wants to live in New York. Call Syracuse and tell them that you don't have your other offers yeat but the offer they sent is too low. Architects have to be smooth negotiators. Let's see how you fare in getting yourself some more moolah.

Owning a design firm or working in one?

that's a good idea... thanks.

and i'm a girl!

working in a firm, but owning a design firm would be nice...

I started my firm in Manhattan when I was 28. That's the only way to go if you are a girl. Design opportunities for female architects are tough to come by. The money is five times better if you pay yourself, ;).

Maximum amount of debt you want to graduate with is $30K. Try to serve as an RA to get room and board free (2 years @ $10K per year). Think about taking a year off to earn $30K and you should really really work the fin aid deals. Get on the net and try to scare up some small scholarship funds. Make sure you turn yourself into a CAD genius so that you can earn big dollars in the summer. PM tlaktan for more scholarship suggestions.

Learn to talk about money and negoitiate tough money deals. That is part of what will make you a successful female architect. Backing away from conflict--or putting money fears in the 'too hard' basket will not further your career.

Good luck.

hi, i am wondering about the same question too -
Is syrcause architecture worth that much?

Since i didn't get a major scholarship or ANY fin. aid, the cost per year is about 37000 ($45000-$8000). My dad told me he can afford the tuition, although life might not be as easy as now... On the other hand, if i stay in Canada (Mcgill., waterloo or U of T), the tuition would be much cheaper and alot more affordable..

So is the education provided at syracuse that much better than Canada considering the difference in the price? I'm not sure where i'm going to work later on, maybe china (i'm from Hong Kong), Canada or the states... I just want to know how big of a difference would it make if i recieved a Barch from syracuse and a BA and March from U of Toronto...

Thanks

Mc Gill has a very solid program in architecture.

Canandian degrees have an equal if not higher reputation in Asia, I think. Congrats on all of those acceptances, nin. It's tough for Canandians to get Fin Aid.
