Is it your first choice?

I am just curious because I was waitlisted. If you got in to every school you applied would you go to Wash U? How many people feel that Wash U actually is the place that you will wind up?

I got accepted. To be honest, Wash u is by no means my first choice. And I showed little or no interest at all through the process. I was deferred by Princeton which is still my first choice. But I am still very happy to get in Wash u and I don't think i will have much problem if that's where i end up eventually.

I am like alwaysfaithful in that Wash U is not my first choice and that I showed little interest throughout the admissions process. I've been accepted but I'm still waiting on Princeton. Princeton and Northwestern are my top picks at the present time but it's not set in stone or anything. Who knows? I might just end up at Wash U which is an amazing school and I'm sure I would do fine there.

WashU was my first choice. I showed a lot of interest and stats similar to people who were accepted in previous year, but unfortunately I was wait listed. Even if I do get off the waitlist and get an acceptance, I have already been accepted to my second choice, so I will probably end up there. But if I was accepted to Wash U without being waitlisted, it is definitely where I would have gone.

Wash U is my first choice. I got accepted, but I didn't get any scholarships, which probably means I won't have enough money to go there. I think their yield rate is so low because they attract good students through their scholarships, and since scholarships are only given to 2-5% of the applicants, most people won't be able to go!

It's not my first choice, but I showed a lot of interest in e-mails so I think that's what got me in. If they give me some nice financial aid, I'll consider it.

Wash U isn't my first choice. i was deferred EA by yale and if I get in, thats where I'm going. There's still a few others that I applied to that I would still pick over Wash U. All that said though, I am really excited to be into Wash U, and if it is where I end up, I am sure I would be happy. After all, the reason I applied there is because I think it's a good match for me. I showed little or no interest on my application though (no visit, no interview, etc, although I did apply for a merit-based scholarhip (which I did not get, but it may have indicated an interest...i may be wrong, but who knows)).

I didn't really have a top choice. More like top three choices: Carleton, Grinnell, and Wash. U.

It was my first choice over the summer, but I changed my mind and didn't apply ED (I'm waitlisted now). I never got the chance to visit. However, I don't think any of these really affected me as much as the fact that (almost) everyone in the competitive section of my school applied to WashU. Also, a few of the other schools in my district had insanely large numbers of people applying here too. I suppose this was due to the easy application process.

Now, even if I were accepted, it would not be my first choice. Or second. Or third. (Perhaps fourth lol).

Yeah, in Arkansas, Wash. U. is the number 1 private school applied to outside of the state.

machiavelli: Where did you get into and what are your top choices?

yeah, WashU is definitely not my first choice. I applied on a whim and I highly doubt I'll go there.

Are you still attending the multicultural program there?

if that question was directed towards me, everkingly, then the answer is probably not. the weekend is over my spring break and i already have plans.

washU is my second choice. cornell is my first - hope i get in. but i may well end up at washU and i am mighty glad and thankful i got in. waiting on fin aid...

the washU process is so unique that you feel very much a part of the community there as a result of the personality of the process even before decisions come in. and that's why a rejection or waitlisting is really very disappointing....
...but i really wonder why they waitlist so many applicants. beyond me, really

Wash U...is my last choice if I can help it. Since I'm local, I was essentially bullied into applying by my parents. Haha, I have a strong feeling that I'll end up there anyway for financial reasons. My resentment's irrational since it's a fantastic school, but we'll see...

This thread ought to give you some idea: most responding don't have WashU as a first choice.
WashU had 22,000 applications, and only has 1,300 spots - but I'd guess they have a heck of a time figuring out how many they have to accept to fill 1,300 spots- if kids only have WashU as a backup, or "only applied on a whim", or "only applied b/c my parents made me", or "only will go to WashU if I don't get into ____".

That, to me, explains why they have so many kids waitlisted - these applicants are qualified, and WashU needs a lot of "backups" if a significant percentage of the ones they actually accepted go elsewhere.

Yeah, I got waitlisted. Yet, it wasn't even close to a first choice. I ended up getting into MIT instead... So really, I have no idea what the whole thing is about.

For years WUSTL has tried to admit the kids who will come and has had a long waitlist. Tufts apparently does the same thing (the phenomenon is known as the "Tufts Syndrome"). So if someone has the stats for an Ivy and/or there is some indication that the student's preference is elsewhere, s/he will be waitlisted. But someone who looks like a candidate for whom WUSTL is the first choice and who has the qualifications gets admitted.

I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happens at any school that is a popular fallback school for Ivy applicants.

I know the school read my kids correctly. It was my son's first choice and he was admitted. It was not my daughter's first choice and she was waitlisted (and admitted by what was her first choice).

Applying to the scholarships for the different schools is probably a good indicator of who has Wash U as one of their top choices or not.

So....apply to the individual scholarships of the schools you're interested in....
