Is Ithaca worth 10K more per year than Crane?

New to this site, but would definitely appreciate some feedback....
HS Senior accepted to Crane for Music Education and Ithaca for Music Perfomance/Education. At this point, Ithaca would cost 10K more than Crane per year. Anyone know whether its worth the extra cost?

For straight music ed, probably not. They both are very good programs. An additional 10k may be worth it, particularly in a performance concentration. Specific applied faculty, studio strength, peer quality, potentially better performance and/or gigging opportunities and exposure may well be worth an additional $10k per annum.

Part of the answer must also lie in how much more difficult the additional $40k will be to absorb. This is really a family financial decision, but if it’s to be funded by additional loans, the answer may well change to “perhaps not”.

We’d also like to add your d’s two acceptances plus any additional ones (and eventual final decision) here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/817953-master-list-acceptances-fall-2010-a-60.html

If you could indicate the instrument, one of us “dads” will make sure it’s posted.

We had the same choice and voted no, though DS is majoring in music ed/performance at Crane. He also really preferred his Crane studio over the Ithaca one.

Hi, haven’t posted on here in ages but we also had to make this choice. Ithaca was my DD’s number one choice as a Horn player. She loved the campus, loved the professor. In the end it did come down to money unfortunately. As a music teacher, or even if they are lucky enough to get a job playing in an orchestra you have to think about how much debt they will be able to afford to graduate with or how much you as a family can afford to take on. If $40K extra does not seem so bad and your child really wants Ithaca then go for it. Like everyone said, it is a decision that does not have the same answer for every student and family.

Luckily DD also loved Fredonia (which is where is now) and has been having a wonderful experience there. To think we almost skipped the audition too because she was so certain that Ithaca was where she would end up. She is considering doing her grad work at Ithaca though.

trumpet - thanks for your replies - patiently (and hopefully) awaiting letter for potential music scholarship
