I am trying to decide whether to apply to Duke or JHU early. I want to go into med. Which one would you suggest? Which one do I have a better shot at?

come on someone give their ideas on JHU and thoughts on Duke and JHU

You look like an great canidate for both schools. Apply to the school that you like more. Dont submit the SAT-I scores and look for some safety schools because many qualified applicants get rejected. I would suggest UNC-Chapel Hill because you are instate.

JHU is better for med. (I mean, come on, it isn't rocket science) Duke has good BME, which could lead to medicine, but all of the other engineering is crap (it doesn't really matter for you since you want premed, though)

well Duke is closer, but I think from what I heard JHU is less preppy and stuck up. I was hoping to get some insight from ppl attending Duke or JHU. The doctor my mom works for went to Duke as undergrad and said it was the worst experience. He said they were spoiled, stuck up, threatened him for ruining the curve on a test, and just plain rude. Now i am kind of scared of applying. I would hope someone can clear up these accusations or tell me if there is a real difference in the schools. He strongly recommended JHU. Not putting down Duke I am just trying to figure which school is better for me. So hopefully someone here can tell me otherwise.
Thanks

I think you have a good shot at both schools, your ACT score is very nice, and so is your GPA. You have some good ECs as well.

I'm also interested in JHU, and I'm driving down on Saturday to visit, so I'll tell you what I thought of it. A lot of times you can tell a lot about the makeup of a college just by what kind of people visit/interview there.

thanks let me know how it goes and have a good time

"He said they were spoiled, stuck up, threatened him for ruining the curve on a test, and just plain rude. Now i am kind of scared of applying."

I'm not being pro-Duke or anything (because honestly I would go JHU) but if you do end up going to Duke, don't let those type of people deter you, anywhere you go for that matter. People are going to be jerks where ever. If they threaten you for ruining a curve (which I couldn't imagine, that just sounds horrible) just tell 'em off. Shove it in their face and walk away. I hate people like that, so don't let them take advantage of you. (your probably like, thanks doctor phil :) )

Well, just got back from the JHU trip. Here's what I thought:

The Good
-Very nice campus(in fact the best I have seen so far out of BU, BC, Wesleyan, Bowdoin, American and Bates). It really looks nice and it has a pleasant little colonial feel to it. Really scenic gardens with gazebos. Pretty.
-From what I have heard, it is a fantastic academic school. 100% of law school applicants go on to law school, 90% for med school.
-Very good facilities, impressive fitness center complete with rock wall
- lots of "atmosphere" after all you are in the middle of a metropolitan city.
- nice library

The Bad
-tour guide said that students were hyper competitve, there were times friends wouldn't help friends because it would mess up the curve.
- some safety issues, a JHU student was murdered off campus a while ago. Most of the juniors and seniors live off campus in apartments in Baltimore, housing is not guaranteed. At if you don't know Baltimore is not exactly a safe city.
-dorms were sorta like dungeons. They smelled and it felt like a prison in there.

THanks wraider2006
I am still looking into Duke but I think JHU is better for me socially. Duke is big on greek life and i am not into that stuff. When we went on a tour we had pledge get rushed and the tour guide freaked out. But most ppl were really nice and waved hi so I need to figure out which one I want to apply early to. Have you toured Duke? If so what were your thoughts?
Thanks

No, I haven't. Duke is a little too far from home for me.

I'd pick JHU over Duke, but that is just because of geographic location. I don't really know much about Duke, except all the kids who want to go ED to the University at my school love to party.

Well I am leaning towards JHU since it is more renowned for medicine and I think it would be a better social fit for me. Since I am not a partier, I like to hang out with a few close friends, JHU sounds better for me. I just need to wait for the application to go online.
You are applying this year right, wraider2006? You'll have to tell me how that goes. Maybe we'll see each other there if things work out right.

I'm also applying, but you're shots are better than mine lol.. I have a question though: one of the requirements for applying RD to JHU is your current secondary school report, but is there one mandatory for ED? I'm looking at the website, but there is no list for what ED applicants need, but there is one for RD. Maybe I'm missing something, can someone list what I need?

Thanks.

I was wondering how many teacher recommendations are needed. If there are 2 then I need to get in contact with a teacher that is leaving.
I am pretty sure secondary school report is needed for ED bc Duke wanted if I remember right. What do you want to study KRabble88?

What documents are required? By what dates must my documents be postmarked?

Thanks. I'm really interested in chemistry as maybe a pre-med major, but I understand it is cut-throat competition. I think two from teachers and one from your GC is good. Also, would it be bad to have two recommendations from two different teachers but teaching the same thing (Chem and AP Chem)? I would like to get a rec from my 10th grade chem teacher and one from my 11th grade AP chem teacher- is this a bad choice? Each told me that they would write up excellent recs (and my 10th grade chem teacher is known for writing amazing ones). I want to ask my AP chem teacher, because he said he would write a good one and also because it was one of two of my first AP classes. The other AP class I got a B in, and I don't know if he would write a good one. Thanks.

I am not sure. I would go with who ever would write the best. Don't settle for someone who wouldn't say you are the best. Plus it would show you really like chem. I am not sure though. ask your guidance counsler or post it somewhere someone with more knowledge would be sure to know

definently JHU ED (unless you are looking for financial aid). JHU is a great school and much better than Duke in med.

the site makes it sound like i only need one teacher recommendation but i think i will get in touch with the other teacher anyway. I am just mad I didn't think of this before hand. The dr. I have spoke to all say go JHU
