If I hadn't heard that rumour, I would never have even considered it. Since I have heard it and I DO go here, I know it's a garbage concept. Everyone is here to learn, not to compete.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS it is, that's why I was hesitant at applying at first

^^I know people who go there...in fact my friend said that certain people actually tried to give her incorrect information when she asked for help (this was not an exaggeration)

I'm not saying everyone there is like this, but from what I've heard it's worse than at other schools

Yes. For No. Reason.

2 years ago I got the $120,000 scholarship that they give out every year and turned it down simply b/c I got the worst vibe from Hopkins, and heard some ridiculous stories.

First, competitive and cutthroat, mean two different things. Yes, Hopkins is competitive - everyone wants to do well - but it's not cutthroat - people don't try to do well at the expense of others. I've been at Hopkins at 3.5 years and the only "cutthroat" behavior that I've heard of is in the rumors that prefrosh always ask about. Most people here are pretty collaborative and end up working together, not against each other, in doing homework and studying for tests. Yes, there are some people who live in the library and only want to study by themselves, but 1) that's the case at any university and 2) that's certainly not the majority of people here.

Bottom line: take everything you hear down the grapevine with a grain of salt. If you want to see what it's really like, come for a visit, stay overnight, and ask real students what they think.

I have never posted before, but feel like I have something to offer kids who want to apply to Hopkins, but, at the same time, feel that they might find themselves in an environment that is too competitive to be enjoyable.
First, let me say that my time here is coming to a close, as I will be graduating in the spring. I am so sad to be leaving. This has been the most wonderful time of my life. I have made so many wonderful fun and supportive friends. My social life has been amazing, and I have also immensely enjoyed being part of an athletic team, acting in some plays, and participating in leadership positions.
Of course if you come to Hopkins, you will have to do your work, but you will soon find out that the benefits for wanting to do well, far outweigh the alternative. Most of you will want to go on to a great graduate school, so no matter what, you will try hard to do well.
The professors and the administators here, at Hopkins, have always been wonderful to me. I don't know anyone who feels differently.
I had an amazing experience, and will cherish it for the rest of my life. I hope that no matter where any of you decide to attend college, that when you are finished, you can say the same.

Hopkins is no more 'competitive' than any other highly selective uber-awesome school. This is a rumor that has been proselytized by people who have no clue about what type of place Hopkins raelly is. At [top 20 private school], yes (surprise) students care about their grades as they wouldn't be there if they didn't.

If you want to go to a school where people don't care about their grades, you should probably look at the US News - Tier II schools.

I give no credability to rumors (particularly here on CC). If you want to be amongst some of the brightest, talented, interesting and most motivated students around the globe - perhaps [tpo 20 private school] is a good fit.

If you want a regular college, Hopkins is not it - Hopkins is exceptional in every measure and therefore by definition, not for everyone.
