Is JMU hard to get into if I live in California and I have above average scores and GPA?

Could i ask why you chose JMU? Moving all the way across the country seems odd (to me anyways) when Cali has a bunch of great schools

one of the few quantitative finance majors in the country @123redskins

Oh ok, well JMU isn’t a super hard school to get into. Granted, I wouldn’t call it a “safety school”. The school’s reputation is getting better and better each year which is leading to more competitive admissions. I got in with a 3.57 (did really bad freshman year), 1220 SAT , and only a couple EC’s like DECA ( although, i have had a job for 2 years now- which looks really good according to admissions)The avg GPA is a 3.8 while the avg SAT is only like 1150. You should be fine as long as you keep up your grades.

It’s a wonderful school, IMO. But bear in mind if you are OOS, that you probably should have scores a bit above averages reported.

is that weighted or uw? @123redskins and what’s your major?

thanks! @cptofthehouse is it well-known or prestigious?

Weighted, majoring in marketing right now but may switch to political science. JMU is more regionally based compared to places like UVA or VT and not as well known nationally. They’re rated a a “regional university” b/c of their lack of doctoral programs.

this is helpful…thanks @123redskins how do you like it? do you know if they give scholarships?

Haha, i’m an incoming freshman, but i’ve only heard good things. I know there are a bunch of scholarships, especially in the college of business, that become available after freshman year. They’re are also a few general and departmental scholarships for incoming freshman, if your wondering for next year. The campus is beautiful, its impossible not to fall in love with it and all the amazing people that inhabit it.

did you apply to VT? @123redskins

Yep, it was my #1 and i got wait listed It really hurt because i was certain I was going to get in

I thought it was easy to get into when I applied last year. It was never really a concern of mine getting in.
In-state: 3.67 GPA, 1440 SAT, volunteered in 3rd World Southeast Asian countries since middle school, no ECs besides working
I came in with a lot of AP credits and started off as a sophomore.

Are the academics good? Are you attending now? @conceptualism

I’m finishing up my first year now!
I see you’re interested in the business school. It’s an extremely good program, better than VT’s.
I’m not in the program, but it is extremely competitive and cutthroat. A lot of my graduating friends with business majors already have paying jobs waiting for them when they leave.

My school provides stats on colleges and JMU’s high combined SAT scores are around a 1925 but that is the top of the middle 50%. The bottom of the middle 50% falls around a 1625 so the average combined is about a 1775. If you’re out of state then you’ll probably want a higher score. @cnikroo
