Is LAC or big Uni better for me? from an interesting standpoint...

If by social life, you mean making friends, I think it’s easier at a LAC. If you mean, having lots of semi-professional sporting events to attend, you need a research university. As a general rule, people probably go on “dates” more frequently at a large university, possibly because there’s no downside if the date goes badly (you’re less likely to see the person again.)

I think LACs make it easier to develop a strong social network because the people you see in your (small) classes, are the people you eat with (there’s usually only one main dining hall), are the people you see regularly on campus and/or live near. At a school of 10,000+, it’s less likely that you will run into the same people in multiple locations on a daily basis. That can be a good thing if you want to avoid someone, but I think it generally means that it takes longer to find your group. Of course, it also comes back to culture-you want to make sure you are comfortable with the dominent vibe, whatever it is, because you won’t be able to avoid it as you can at a large school.

Take a look at SUNY New Paltz. There are quite a few International students that choose to go here and they are welcomed and celebrated. New Paltz has a very accepting student body and it’s a great town about 1 1/2 hours north of NYC. Bus to NYC is easy to get right from campus and they also have free trips to NYC regularly that you can sign up for. If you have any more questions feel free to PM me.

I think the summer term scene looks a little better than the fall. Not quite as good as winter and spring terms however. All schools experience four seasons of course. :-)
