I'm considering just buying a pc since I don't want to get my laptop stolen- since they are easier to steal. Is this a good idea, or would i be better off taking my chance w/ a laptop?

I'm sure it depends on the college.

Your own habits, also, can make a difference. You can get a lock for your laptop and lock it to your desk. Keep your dorm room locked when you and roomate are away, and don't leave it lying around or out of view in the library or dining hall. Get a backpack that has padding and room for your laptop, and take it with you when you travel.
If you are careful and tend to be fairly vigilant with your belongings, (if you're female and carry a purse, you should be used to this) you should be ok with a laptop.

Depending on your school, local police may offer STOP plating.
