Is LMU the school for me?

I am REALLY hoping to get accepted into LMU next year. I am planning on studying Film and possibly Chemistry as well. As college applications begin to approach, I am getting quite nervous about getting admitted to this amazing school.

My stats are as follows:

Gender: Male

Race: Caucasian

Residency: MN

GPA: UW- 3.40 (school doesn't do weighted)

Took a total of 6 Honors and 2 AP classes (so far)

Rank: ~Top 25% at highly competitive high school (Eden Prairie HS)

AP: U.S. Gov, Comparative Gov, Psychology

ACT: 27 (28 super-scored)

Senior Schedule: AP Lit, AP Stats, AP Euro, Spanish 5 (College Credit), Honors Physics, Concert Choir, AP Macro & Microeconomics

ECs:

-Executive Board Member for Drama Club (1st year on Board, 4 year member)

-Top Auditioned Choir (3 years)

-Auditioned Men's Acapella Group (2 years)

-Audition Chamber Choir (1 year)

-4 Musicals, 5 other productions (Been apart of Drama for all 4 years)

*Placed 1st at Subsections, 3rd at Sections, and 2nd at Thespian Society Competition for
our Competitive One Act.

-2 years of JV Lacrosse (Captain Sophomore Year)

-Amnesty International (1 year)

-Young Democrats (1 year)

-Various Volunteer Hours (~100 hours so far)

I know My GPA is rather low, but I think that I am overall well rounded.

I would also love to learn more about the social aspect of LMU. Although I know LMU is a Jesuit university, I am a liberal atheist and would like to know how I will be, socially, at LMU?

Bump???

What are you planing on majoring in?

As I stated before, I am planning on double majoring in Film Production and Chemistry.

Sorry I completely missed that! I would say your chances at Chem. are fair but Film will be a high reach. Try to get a 30+ on your ACT. Will you be able to pay sticker price or will you need aid?

I may need a little aid. Would you suggest applying undecided and then transferring to film?

Have you done a FAFSA 4Caster or LMU’s net price calculator? It is expensive and they don’t meet need for all students, higher stats probably get more aid. Film admission is much tougher, but I would guess that transferring in might be more difficult, does anyone out there have any insight, it’s true at many other good film schools that the back door is tougher just because they don’t have many spots open up. LMU admission does seem to care about the service to others aspect, it’s not just your GPA and test scores. Do you have film related work for your creative resume?
Finally, although LMU is a catholic school, the Jesuit tradition seems open minded to other beliefs and I think the atmosphere at school is fairly nonjudgmental concerning religious beliefs.

The religious environment is extremely laid back . Quoting one of my sons friends; “God is up in this b@#&h!”

Thanks for the feedback! Does anyone else have any other knowledge of the admission process for the film program? I am getting a little nervous and wondering if I should just apply undecided instead…

We went to the television and film production admitted students event. There were many knowledgeable kids and families, and their were some family like us. You could not choose a second choice major. We were not committed to the major, and they did not make it seem lIkea a double major would work . Not sure about switching into film, but I was surprised at how quickly they let my son switch to engineering; before he accepted the admission offer.

Thanks for all the help everyone! I am almost done with my LMU application! I would love to hear any more opinions as well.

hi I am also applying for LMU currently, as a transfer though. I want to get in Recording Arts major. Do you wish to go to LMU in Fall or Spring?
Anyway, Best of luck!

My daughter is undeclared in the College of Liberal Arts. She is also interested in Biology. However the Science classes with Labs, i.e. Chemistry, Biology, Physics are limited to only those students who are in the College of Science and Engineering. Other students are only allowed to choose from a limited number of science classes designated for non-science majors. I would confirm with the school before you commit that you would be able to take lab classes if you are not in the Engineering/Science school.

My D is in animation. You have to apply to programs in SFTV and you can’t just switch majors in. Once in SFTV, you can switch but it’s tough and you can get behind. You start taking major classes freshman year. Production is especially competitive. You need to submit a portfolio for animation - I don’t know about the others. Your stats look good for LMU but I agree, that since production is tough maybe stronger test scores.

You will have to take a couple of religion classes, but the options might surprise you! Lots of choices in many different topics. Financial aid is not plentiful, as we have found with other Jesuit schools. Packages include loans. But - this is a beautiful school, and a great program! Glad you’re applying and good luck!

I ended up applying for Journalism…how do my chances look?!?
