Is Loyola Chicago really a better school than DePaul?

My D would love to go to school in Chicago. She's not UC material. She saw the DePaul campus on a school trip and really likes it. I've been doing a bit of research and it seems like Loyola Chicago is more highly ranked. She's a probable business major and I thought DePaul would come out on top for business.

Any thought on those schools?

Nah. Most people in Chicago lump UIC/DePaul/Loyola into the same category. People do not get excited amongst the differences amongst the three schools. The differences are more cultural/research than academic.

I would agree that DePaul and Loyola are considered equals in the Chicago market. My experience is that UIC is typically thought of as a notch lower.

DePaul (where I went to school) has a great reputation for producing business and computer science graduates - especially accounting. Loyola (where my wife got her MBA) has a fine business school too, but I believe the fact that Loyola has a medical school boosts its overall USN&WR rating. Fiske on the otherhand, gives DePaul the nod over Loyola. Business Week ranks DePaul undergraduate business school #40, Loyola Chicago #103 and UIC #105.

IMHO the DePaul campus in Lincoln Park definitely better than the Loyola lakeshore campus.

DD is a current DePaul student majoring in accounting. We have nothing but good things to say about the School of Commerce at DePaul; D has had great (but challenging) classes and has already made good contacts with the DePaul faculty. One of the reasons she chose DePaul was the alumni nework among business grads in the Chicago area.

Originally she looked at Loyola as well. Although she liked Loyola, she wasn’t a big fan of the campus and she found the vibe there more overtly religious (which may be fine for some but just wasn’t for her. We’re a religious family but not Catholic.) She really loves the more urban atmosphere of Lincoln Park.

PM me if you have any questions about DePaul from a parent’s perspective. Again, no big complaints, especially if you’re looking for a large urban school.

I will say that right now Loyola is more in the categoy of “we might as well visit if we’re visiting DePaul.” But you never know - my '09 Son ended up at the “might as well stop there because it’s on the way home” school.
