Is Madison Just As Good As The Big 5?

Even UCLA and UCB take a significantly smaller freshman class than UW. They offset that by taking many JC transfers but those don’t count against them when selectivity is discussed (and I have nothing against the JC policies). If UW could get away with taking just 4000-4500 freshmen the selectivity would increase significantly. But selectivity and being considered elite are hardly in the Wisconsin mindset. They have a far more populist worldview. As you would expect from a school that helped invent unemployment insurance and social security.

There you are barrons…

I have a very messed up eye so I’m limiting my reading and typing. Yesterday they did a 360 degree laser spot welding to keep my retina from detaching. Not fun. Now I have one eye that is blurry from all the debris floating around–and the other is not so hot either as they did a similar thing to it two years ago and it still has some floaters. And I’m getting cateracts–I’m not that old yet but my eyes are turning to junk. GRRRR

So if I have some typos please let them slide. I can barely read right now. I need a bigger screen. Can I demand one under handicapped laws?;-)

Barrons,

If you’re using a Windows machine, you might consider clicking on “my computer,” "Display, and adjusting the font size while you’re recuperating.

Hope you get better, barrons!

HOPE YOU GETS BETTER BARRONS!

:) :frowning:   :stuck_out_tongue:   :o

Thanks–I could read that no problem. I am working mostly in Word/excel so I put it on 125% but it slows me down. I’ll try it for the interweb stuff. I’m feeling a little sorry for myself today.

I think Cal is the only public uni that would be worth the extra cash over UW-Madison. UW may not be in the top 5 per se, but it is still a great school and a bargain for an in-state student.

I disagree Cuse0507. I wouldn’t pay the extra cash to go OOS to any public if I lived in Wisconsin or Minnesota and the had the majors I was interested in.

Assuming you’re OK with all the other factors at Wisconsin outside of academics and finances, unless there’s a particular program which is outstanding at another school and mediocre at UW, it’d be silly in my mind to go elsewhere for a perceived greater amount of prestige. You’ll get a good education, enjoy your time in college, and have essentially the same job prospects when you graduate, all at a lower cost. Am I missing something?

Also disagree with Cuse. With the exception of a couple of specialized programs (Eng + Chem at Cal, film/theater at UCLA, bioeng at SD, oenology at Davis), I don’t think any of the UCs are worth the OOS price.

^^^really any public university for that matter if you’re from a state that has high quality ones and you can get in of course.

^^the difference being that UVa (and UNC?) has good need-based aid for OOS students; thus, for those two its not so clear cut. UMich offers merit aid for OOS. UNC is $10k cheaper than UMich or Cal for OOS…

The UCs are just expensive, rapidly approaching the COA of a private.

Good merit aid for the 10% OOS students UNC has on campus? I’m impressed.

Alright, the responses so far have been pretty much what I was expecting. But now I need to throw in the kicker: What if I am planning on majoring in finance and am thinking about possibly going into investment banking?

Madison has a good business school, and you won’t have a discernable difference at any other public university. I repeat: you’ll get a good education, enjoy your time in college, and have essentially the same job prospects when you graduate, all at a lower cost.

Good aid for pretty much everyone; hence its consistent #1 ranking as far as “Best Values” are concerned by Forbes.

Unless they want to major in engineering and some sciences.

While it is possible to get into i-banking from Wisconsin, you would be a lot better off going to Michigan. Wisconsin sends almost no graduates into BB i-banks.

Hence the creation of NC State University, located about a 30 minute drive from UNC.
