Is mail from college any indication of chances of admission?

@skieurope, even more amazing is what UChicago sends after you get in. Student and parents are showered with swag prior to May 1.

NO. Just remember to recycle all those mailings- if you feel like it you can keep a count to see which schools send the most (assuming you have nothing better to do).

My D, the ultimate city girl, used to get these great brochures from Colorado schools with pictures of rolling mountains, puffy clouds and weekend hiking and ski trips. She would then start contemplating whether she would “fit” at a school out west. I reminded her that she hates the outdoors, but it is reflective of the fact that the mailings do get attention (at least for a minute).

Advertising is advertising, and nothing more.

Both the Cappex and Parchment websites were remarkably accurate in predicting the chance of admission for the five colleges our D applied and was accepted to based on the information she entered about herself into her profile.

We easily recognized the colleges which were realistically beyond her reach that were sending her mail. Plugging in those colleges into these websites gave us a sobering, although not unexpected, reality check when we saw her predicted chances of admission.

Everyone is different, but for our D, it made no sense to waste application fees and risk disappointment by applying for colleges with a predicted low chance of admission.

No. It means his scores are in the range of students that apply. But… they only accept few (maybe 10?) or applicants.

Oh mine also got the personalized UChicago postcard. I think we are getting almost weekly mail from them. I wonder what kind of marketing budget they have! Must be huge…that’s why tuition is so high LOL.

Yeah, the personalized postcard from UChicago… Except on S 1st College Board exam, he had managed to incorrectly enter his name. :-S And it happened to get entered as another plausible name that was 1 letter different than his. So the personalized postcard was to the WRONG name, as was a TON of his college mail–we even get some to that name now after he’s completely done with the application/acceptance process.

As a side note, tell your kid to make sure their name is correct on their first AP and/or PSAT exams. I didn’t specifically register him for those, he did it at school. It’s a PAIN to get the name on their College Board account changed!
