Hello all. Tulane is my #1 school and my application is finished, except I have not decided if I want to make a ZeeMee page or not. Tulane recommends that applicants make ZeeMee pages, but I’ve looked into it and don’t know if it’s worth the time (I feel like it just reiterates a lot of what’s in my application). However, I know you can create an “introducing me” video, and that kind of interests me because video making is a hobby of mine. To anyone who’s applied in the past/made a ZeeMee, is it really worth the effort, or will it make no difference? Thanks!
ZeeMee is a relatively new tool and this is the first year that many schools have included links to ZeeMee accounts on their application pages. I’m not sure how many students have used this in the past, so I don’t know how much feedback you will get on this question. As an independent college counselor with a senior at Tulane, I can tell you that while none of my students have opted to make a ZeeMee account so far, I do think that it could be a valuable tool for those who put in the effort. I would however only do this if you feel comfortable making the introductory video and if you think that you can present yourself well. This tool is also great for showcasing talents (dance, a sport, playing an instrument), volunteer efforts, interests etc. You can upload photos and videos with short descriptions (please make sure that these are well written and grammatically correct. So, I guess that the answer is: do you need to make a ZeeMee page - absolutely not. Will it show that you put in extra effort? - yes. Could it help? -maybe, if you make a great impression. Could it hurt? - maybe, if you make an awkward or “bad” video, or submit something done half-heartedly.
For Tulane, I personally think that the most important things that you can do are 1- write a sincere Why Tulane essay that really expresses why Tulane is the right fit for you (do not write a generic Why essay that could apply to any school) and 2- Demonstrate interest - visit or go to a local information session and contact your admissions counselor.
Good luck.
@jozuko Thank you! I’ve decided on making a ZeeMee page, and I have a pretty good introductory video in mind Believe me, my “Why Tulane” essay is VERY specific and genuine, especially since I’ve already visited it twice (I live about 3 hours from NOLA, and my mom’s from NOLA too).
My son created a ZeeMee page last year and it was very easy to do and showcased his diverse interests very well. He did not create an introductory video, but just posted a photo. Unless the video is pretty good and engaging, I think I photo would be sufficient. I think it could only help.
My son was accepted ED and did do a ZeeMee page. I think it is a worthwhile addition to your package, and
easy to do. He did not do a video, but in addition to photos he did upload in pdf format documents that he wrote relative to his ECs, a newspaper article on an activity that he participated in and was quoted in, etc. I think the ZeeMee page can be a way to show some tangible results of efforts and may be impactful. It’s just another opportunity- probably won’t in and of itself make a huge difference, but could give you an edge.
@april10 and @valletta - I did not realize that the video was optional. Thanks for the info. I actually was at Tulane this past weekend and spoke to a student who works at admissions. He said that while not many students had submitted ZeeMe pages, there were some that were so impressive that it put their applications over the top - right into the yes pile! So, it looks like ZeeMee can definitely help!
@jozuko - ZeeMee is a great way for your admission counselor to get to ‘know you’ a little better. With such a large number of applicants, it can sometimes seem hard to differentiate yourself from everyone else applying. ZeeMee is just one of the many ways that an AO can learn more about an applicant.
Although not required, ZeeMee could be a nice addition to your application.
My d did a ZeeMee page and was just accepted EA. She did not do the introductory video but included an activity-related photo within her photos on the page. I really think it can only help!
I have no authority on it, but I would recommend making one. It’s not really the information what matters, but how you convey it. Images and sounds stand out more than words; so do it if you can make it fresh.
