Is Marketing really a good major????

I aspire to major in marketing at NYU Stern after I graduate high school (I’m a junior). I know marketing is a pretty popular major across the country, which is kind of exactly what’s scaring me. Is it too popular? Are there enough jobs for everyone? I doubt it. However, I’ve taken a marketing class here at my high school and loved it, which made me want to major in it in college. I guess it’s not necessarily that its a popular major and that there may be a significant amount of people in my class in college, but maybe the fact that I really want a stable job that pays well in the future and I’m worried that I won’t have that and that my life will be a constant cycle of getting hired and fired. I understand that an MBA in marketing would help a lot but I still feel as though even with an MBA, there’s still too many people with any sort of marketing degree and not enough jobs. What can I do to stand out from everyone else? Is a marketing degree really worth it? I’m really scared for my future.

To be honest marketing is one of those “fluffy” majors (see also bus. management) that not employable on its own. I think a degree in statistics with a marketing minor (or a double major if your school offers it) is a much better choice. Good luck.

I think for college students, it depends heavily on the quality of on-campus recruiting and networking opportunities. Marketing is a good major (especially if paired with something like database marketing or statistics for extra… marketability) but it can be easy for a school to create a ‘marketing major’ that’s just some generic psychology classes given a ‘business’ veneer. Of course I don’t think that you have to worry that NYU Stern would do that to you but it’s still worth finding different ways to distinguish yourself.

There are fly by night business degree programs and NYU is not at all one of them. You are good if you study marketing at NYU.
