Is Math a competitive major to apply?

Hey guys, I applied to umich over EA for math major. I’m wondering if math is a competitive major to apply or say are there a lot of people who applied to math major?
I’m nervous since I have a ACT of 28. But a Math score of 35. I also attend the hardest class in math and science in high school and have a pretty good grade. My gpa is 3.78 unweighted. 4.8 weighted(rank: 176/600 something). And I’m OOS applicant.
Probably the only shining point of my application is that my math score matching with my math major. And the volunteer teacher I did in rural China for a whole semester junior year. I also wrote the best essay I have ever written.
Umich is the only school I wanna go, so I’m overwhelmed. Please help me out!

The majors of interest that you put down on your application have no bearing on your chances for acceptance. Your chances depend on whether you applied LSA, engineering, nursing, etc., and in that case there is some, but not too much variance in competitiveness of gaining acceptance. Every student in LSA and engineering comes in undeclared. Each department has prerequisites to declare a major, and whether or not you will be allowed to declare a major depends on how you perform as a umich student.

You need to get serious about finding some other schools to apply to that you would want to attend. Having ONE school as the “only school I wanna go” to is not a good idea (and I went to Michigan). Trust me, there are MANY other good colleges out there. Your ACT is quite low, especially for OOS. You need to stop thinking about UM and start focusing on other applications and finding other schools as well. If you get into UM, gravy. If not, you need plans B, C, and D that you can be happy with.

But is there someone can understand me? I can’t think of any school that I would be happy to attend except for UM. Even though I have applied to plenty of schools. I know a lot of schools are great, and my stats aren’t so good. I can can’t help myself keep thinking about UM. That’s probabily how life works. Let’s see what happens.

Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst…

My son’s HS friend who was an academically well-rounded student, and an extremely talented Math whiz (proved by his auditing & doing well in UMich’s hardest math sequence while still in HS) was ultimately rejected by UMich admission.

Most of us were baffled at the outcome and couldn’t think of any reason other than perhaps his essay wasn’t as strong. He’s the type who would’ve done very well as a math major, but unfortunately, was weeded out in the admission process due to something that didn’t have anything to do with his amazing math skills.

He ended up going to his PlanB school. Now… that is how life works sometimes

This isn’t true, because the supplement question

LSA applicants, shouldn’t necessarily talk about LSA as a whole because otherwise every applicant’s essay will sound roughly the same. Instead, they should talk about how they can both benefit and CONTRIBUTE to a specific LSA department.

Even though they ask that as an essay question, I don’t believe that writing about a specific major will increase or decrease your chances. Also you should know that ACT math is pretty far from the math that you would study in college, so the fact that you got a 35 in that section probably won’t make up for the 28 overall. Because your ACT score is below the average, you GPA is a little lower than average, and you are out of state, you are less likely to get in that you are to get rejected. I wouldn’t be surprised if you got in, however, so you should still apply, but definitely try coming to terms that you may have to go elsewhere. You saying that you won’t be happy anywhere except for Michigan means that you haven’t looked into the alternatives very much.
