If my goal is to get into international politics is an MBA in international business a good path to take? I have plans to establish a small business and grow it into an international one. In order to expand my scope into politics, I assume I would need to understand international law as well. Will an MBA provide me with the knowledge to eventually take the step into politics or would another approach be better?

Not in a condescending way, but may I ask what is your current level of education, occupation, specific future goal etc.? This matters when formulating a response based on your current situation because all those keywords that you have above are very broad (ie. international law/politics/business).

I used to ask these questions when I was a senior in HS.

the OP might well be in high school; there’s nothing inherently wrong with that. Also, Polo, he does not need to share details about his/her background. S/he might hypothetically ask, what are the better routes to get a job in X industry? People should be able to answer such questions without prying for personal information. Unless, of course, they were trying to recruit them for the national guard or the marines. :)

OP: an MPP degree might be a better route than an MBA…

If you attend an elite MBA program and network, you should also be able to do break into “international politics” (by which I assume you mean multi-lateral organizations such as the UN and the World Bank).

The MPA at Princeton might be your best bet, if you can get in (it’s free). So, if you are still in high school, make sure you plan in advance to make the pieces fall into place easier… Go and fix something in Darfur or elsewhere in Africa…

Thanks for the response Polo08816. Allow me to formulate my question with more clarity.

I have graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering, but also have experience in restaurant management. In terms of my business goal, I plan on combining the two skills with my hobby of art and visual effects to create a theme restaurant in which the method the waiters/waitresses travel and the way the food is delivered has an effect similar to what you might call “movie magic.” If you’re familiar with the restaurant, Medieval Times, I plan on running a restaurant in a similar fashion, but on a smaller scale and with more visual effects on with an ongoing story. If that is successful, I will expand this concept to hotel and resorts. However, for me to see the level of art and magic I wanted to apply to a whole city, I must expand beyond just creating the effects and move into a role to encourage international investment into this field. I realize that this is not a widespread goal for someone seeking an MBA, but will the MBA be a useful path to get there?

I hope this clarifies things a little bit. I understand it may still be very confusing since it’s difficult for me to express what I wanted without visual aid and without giving away too much info on the details of the operations.

I’m confused, are you going to run a restaurant or go back to school? Surely you’re not planning to do both at the same time. Sounds like an expensive restaurant to get going. Do you have financing? Top B schools should be very interested in you if you’re successful.

If your goal is “restaurant management” (which is fine), why did you even mention “international politics”?? It does not make any sense!

I mean, I am sure most of us haven’t heard about the whole ‘world domination, one restaurant at a time’ strategy…

I think he wants something akin to a Hard Rock Cafe. An MBA will help in establishing something like this. However, I don’t think you’ll need to worry so much about the international aspects of business until it’s time… then you hire someone who knows this stuff.
