Is McWilliams Fitness Center nice?

I can't find a photo of the McWilliams Fitness Center anywhere.

I mean, does it offer more than weight lifting machines?

i assume you mean the fitness center in the athletic complex - not sure what it’s actually called. but it’s pretty sad - they have weight machines, some cardio equipment and access to the pool but it’s really rather small compared to universities of similar size. there is also a fitness center on the south forty that is new and looks nice, but is also small and includes mostly cardio equipment.

The center is a bit of a labyrinth, but if one takes the time to thoroughly explore it, you’ll find it is quite comprehensive. It is not small. The weight room is well equipped with free weights and a good variety of machines. Aerobic training machines are spread out, e.g. the rowing machine are in a different room from the bicycles; but that’s not really an issue once you know where they are. There are a number of basketball courts, as well as racquetball and squash courts. The pool is large. All in all, it compares very well with what I’ve seen elsewhere.

wait. There are rowing machines? Can anyone use them?

(oh god I’m going to make such a fool of myself since I won’t know what to do)

The fitness center has a name?

Everything at this school has a name. Even the interior windows in Siegel have names.

And outside benches and an area of outdoor tiles.

Next up: class chairs, tables, and chalkboards.

It does seem excessive that there is a fee to use the fitness center. $56,000 a year doesnt cover a fitness center!

^There is no fee for undergrads. It’s covered by SU. (The website is terribly outdated. SU has covered it every year I’ve been here).

For non undergrads, it’s only some $50 or so if you want to use the cardio room. The weight room is still free.

I believe there’s a fee for the gym on the south 40? Maybe that’s what onecot is referring to. For clarity’s sake, all this conversation has been about the main fitness center in the athletic complex. The gym on the S40 which requires a fee is (as stated earlier) mostly cardio equipment.

No charge for undergrads to use facilities at the Athletic Center; there is a fee if you need a locker.

The S40 fitness center, mostly cardio, is $45 - it is very nice and very conveniently located.

On the main campus (free for graduates?) is there any sort of indoors/outdoors running track and or elliptical machines?

You can usually get onto the track around francis field, right outside the athletic center. I believe there is an indoor track in the AC, on one of the lower levels. I don’t know for sure, but I would assume that there are ellipticals with the other cardio equipment.

The ellipticals are in the cardio room, which as I said is typically free for undergrads but there is a fee for others (grad students, faculty, associated people, etc all have varying membership fees).

Every school has its strengths and weaknesses and the athletic complex is one of WashU’s weaknesses.

Limited hours(and often changing), outdated facilities, too few basketball and tennis courts that are often occupied. The weight room is adequate for the average lifter but it’s about the size of my high school weight room so its nothing to write home about. I think the pool is nice though.

My main complaint is with the bball rec courts. Few courts(3)… which are frequently occupied. Many groups can reserve a court also further limitingt he space(WashU basketball team, intramurals, and etc.) Although if you go at odd hours they may be free, I remember one time i went to the courts and there were literally 20 people waiting to get in on a game. You’ll notice WashU will have constant renovation that goes on at least somewhere on campus but one of the places which wont be renovated anytime soon that needs it the most is the AC.

That’s just my rant about the AC…Nonetheless, the mcwilliams center is pretty good for most of your cardio needs.
