is mechanical engineering a good major ?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics says the employment rate of Mechanical engineering will fall in the future while electrical engineering is growing as fast as average. I am good at math and physics as well as chemistry. But Mechanical engineering is much more interesting and i really want to major in it ! Due to my family 's financial background, i have to graduate with a degree that will possibly gives me higher job opportunities so that i could be able to take care of my family. According to your opinions, which one do you think is the best for me ?

By the way, can anyone tell me what i need to know when looking up a major or choosing a career ? For example, employment rate ( this is the only thing i know ;P ).

No it doesn’t. To quote the BLS, “Mechanical engineers are expected to have employment growth of 6 percent over the projections decade, slower than the average for all occupations.” which is not the same as the employment rate falling.

Do mechanical. You said yourself you are more interested in it. I did my undergrad in mechanical engineering and graduated in May 2009, in the absolute heart of the recession and I still had job offers before I graduated from good companies.
