Hey guys, so I'm still not sure if ME is the major I want.
I wanted to do something for the environment, like invent something to improve the environment.
Besides that, I also like to design and develop technology, machines...etc

I know there are environmental sciences/technology/engineering. From what I saw on the internet, it's mostly about learning the environmental laws and policies, design waste water treatment plants, sewage treatment. But I don't know a lot about the major so I need some advices, and what are the career's future prospect and employment stuff like that.

Well, mechanical engineering will give you the skills you can create something that will improve the environment. Wind energy, solar energy, nuclear energy, tidal energy are all potential sources of energy for our country that lessen the carbon emissions and these are all designed by mechanical engineers.

Cars have catalytic converts today, which where once designed by mechanical engineers (with help from chemical engineers).

Biodiesel plants are designed by mechanical engineers.

There’s tons of opportunity for designing a product that will help the environment or designing a product to be less bad on the environment. The hard thing is - you don’t know how many jobs there will be any given year relating to the environment.

Environmental engineering is more about designing earthen designs related to the environment. They might be retention ponds, artificial wetlands, or earth cleanup projects. It’s not about designing a product.

I was thinking the same thing when choosing, I figured something to do with energy efficiency, alternative energy research, whatever helps us to become more ‘sustainable’…anyways ME is the place to be for that. I didn’t discover why until I began my studies and still to this day I’m realizing how deep the water hole goes

if you want to work for vestas you’ll be an ME, or if you want to work at an Ethanol Plant, research thermochemical processing of biomass, hydrogen, ammonia economy, energy efficiency in industrial and commercial systems, it’s really endless there’s so many things people don’t know about…

there’s a really good reasearch article about seven ‘wedges’ to level off GHG emissions, it’s really cool if you can find it’s very popular and will give you a solid and real idea of how you can make a difference as an enigneer and which the roles ME and EE will play.
