How does the original post from 2004 have a YouTube link if YouTube was created in 2005 (and the video is from 2006)?
If you look at the bottom of post, it says that this post was edited by Alexandre in January of 2014.
I don’t think most of you experts like @Alexandre and @billcsho know much about it but one “weakness” is about to end: the relatively small and less than state of the art School of Nursing facility. A brand new almost 10x bigger clinical space, state of the art facility will be opening this fall! The S. OF Nursing was always excellent but now it has a building to match!!
^^^^But the School of Nursing has always been ranked very highly. So in essence, it wasn’t/isn’t a weakness.
@rjkofnovi. As I said, the School of nursing has always been good ( although I don’t believe undergrad nursing programs are ranked) but the facilities were indeed a weakness compared to, say UMinnesota or UPITT and other places with much larger state of the art clinical learning centers. Now UMICH has that too. It’s very cool what they will be able to do now.
That’s great information Maya. Thanks for sharing. Considering the state of the art facilities Michigan has for most programs, it would be a shame if Nursing were not housed in a state of the art facility of its own. It would seem this egregious oversight is about to be rectified!
I remember walking to the nursing school over 10 years ago and the building was really dated. I don’t know if they did anything since then. I am glad that there will be a new facility. There are actually quite a few major constructions/renovations going on. They will be a new look in the North Campus, a new building in Ross, and the new graduate hall is almost ready.
The university website has a photo tour of the new graduate building, which is apparently done pending furniture delivery.
For those interested in such things, the university construction calendar runs upward of $500,000,000/year…an astonishing number for a “public” school in a beleagured state: http://regents.umich.edu/meetings/07-15/2015-07-II-2.pdf

It can be fun to watch these building spring up out of the ground over a period of months…
Yeah, I’ve seen the new construction at Umich. Looking forward to see how these buildings will look like.
People are actually pretty upset with the NC renovation right now. Hopefully it would be done soon.
@billcsho - what are the concerns?
It is just a mess and blocking the paths right now. They should have started it earlier.
I really did not like that all of the intro chem classes are taught in a 10,000 seat stadium. (Slight exaggeration, but only slight.)
Come on, Chem 1800 seats no more than 500 students…if memory serves!
Seriously, intro premed classes will be very big at all universities.
My fondest memory of Chem 1800 is Dr. Ege (who wrote the textbook) standing in front of 1800 Chem (where it was packed to the gills because no one wanted to take the 7am class), looking like a rock star being projected onto several large display screens doing some sort of demonstration. I spent the entire lecture giggling because (and forgive me but her accent is rather thick) picturing the Swedish chef from the Muppets. No disrespect meant, she is a brilliant woman.
Edit: I just learned that she passed in 2007. I adored her.
Yea, would be nice the middle of NC didn’t look like a blocked-off bombing range haha.
A big problem in my opinion is that a few PhD students (and certainly more that I don’t know of) are not getting their stipends in any timely fashion – often doing months of research without any pay, being told that it is being ‘processed’ with no actual explanation, and putting unnecessary burdens on these valuable students.
And this is happening in the engineering grad school, which is well-known and respected.
It seems to me, you absolutely need to get close to some faculty in your department who will have your back, because as far as I can tell, the school is completely willing to screw over its talent.
Perhaps this is the case many places, but as was mentioned; this is Michigan, and they should be doing better.
This just seems weak…
This is not good. I’m looking to Michigan for grad school (history). I’m going to keep an eye on that. It was my #1 choice because they have a KILLER history department.
The CCRB (Central Campus Recreation Building) really needs renovating…
As to CCRB and related facilities…the consensus is that they are, indeed, dated…but renovations have been funded and are either in progress or soon to be in progress.
Information on renovations: https://recsports.umich.edu/article/imsb-renovation-frequently-asked-questions
Starting April 2015, the Intramural Sports Building will undergo a 15-month, $21.4 million renovation project. Over the next six years, the renovations will carry over to the North Campus Recreation Building and the Central Campus Recreation Building, with Regental approval. These improvements help Recreational Sports fulfill the need on campus as it relates to fitness and wellness.
Through these efforts, we hope to realize our vision of providing the University of Michigan campus with comprehensive and innovative programs that promote health, recreation, and wellness. Recreational Sports is well on its way to becoming the leaders and best in recreation and is hopeful that this momentum propels the department forward over the next few instrumental years!
Any Financial Math Major here? Does anyone know can I CHOOSE which two intermediate courses to count into my major GPA? I took Econ 402 in the past fall semester and it sucks ( sign* and I would like to take Acc 315 and Acc 318 in the upcoming winter semester. All the three courses are on the intermediate course list. So does UM automatically chooses the first two intermediate courses I complete to count into my major GPA? Can I request to choose the later two ( to get rid of Econ 402 )?
