Is military service a viable alternative to a regular internship?

I’m a Junior Computer Science major and I have yet to get an internship. I’ve been talking to an Army recruiter on and off for the past year and I really want to join the reserves (In fact I was planning on doing that after I graduated anyway). At this point it wouldn’t be impossible to go through BCT over the summer and come back to school after I’m finished with AIT. Hypothetically, if I can get a MOS relevant to my major I could even earn a significant college credits. The only thing I’m worried about is that the training I would receive would look as good on my resume when compared to a run of the mill internship. Personally, I really hope this isn’t the case, I feel like I would get the same level of experience regardless, but I’m really clueless as too what recruiter would think.

Long story short if a company had to pick between two fresh out of college candidates, one who had an internship at a normal company and one who joined the reserves like I might, who has the upper hand? Could joining the reserves be a disadvantage at all? Yes I have googled this and no I haven’t found a clear answer.

So would i as an employer choose someone with experience or someone who may need to ship out at any time?

Do it because you want to do it, not because you think it “looks good”.
