is minnesota worth it..?

I finally got all of my financial aid, and basically..it sucked. I got about 20k in loans and not a single scholarship. This seems to be the case with a lot of people, so my question is this: Is the price really worth it? I could be going to Iowa State for about 14k vs minnesota at 21k; do you guys think Minnesota deserves the 7k difference? Minnesota is my first choice, but I don't know if the perks I am looking forward to at Minnesota are worth what it costs.

I'm instate so I only know about the instate tuition. However, I thought I remember reading somewhere that they were lowering oos tuition from 20K-ish to like 4000 above instate tuition (instate is 10K). I don't know if it is true or when it would start, but it is something to look into if you really want to go there.

ya sorry i didnt really clarify; im already instate for both minnesota and iowa because i have a parent residing in each state. and yes the difference of instate and oos is now only $4,000 for those that didnt know.

Carlson is better than tippie! so u should go to carlson!. btw im giving up kelley at IU to go to Carlson. Cant stand oos at Indiana. hope 2 c u there at carlson. hanson hall is frickin awesome

Is Carlson the only good school? I'm in CLA for math.

tippie is iowa, not iowa state. i dont care about rankings at all, i just like what the school seems to have to offer. i just dont know if those factors are really gonna be worth it..do you guys think a better experience is worth an eventual $28,000?

Ultimately (IMHO) both Iowa & Minnesota have good overall reputations and if you can see yourself at either one, pick the one that will cause you the least debt.

What is hot today might not be tomorrow(or in coming years). Look at your program at each school, visit if you haven't already, and YOU decide if an extra $7K a year is worth it - to YOU. No one here can tell you that.

The CLA, for info sake, is the largest (therefore most popular perhaps???) school at UMN. After having attended the CLA open house this past weekend with my D, as a business person I am impressed with the CLA. Remember not all businesses hire people from "business school." Some employers (more & more) prefer a more well-rounded educated person who is articulate and presents well. Still, Carlson is very impressive too. Both CLA & Carlson diplomas will read "UMN" at the top.

believers mom, do u think i should go to Indiana (kelley) or Minn( Carlson)? I am in state at Minn and out of state at IU. Minn is 20k vs. 28k (w/scholarships+honors college) at Indiana. Kelley is higher ranked than carlson and has a better connection on wall st. both schools have great job placements. as a business person, do employers care about/consider the business school an applicant went to when it comes to searching for jobs?

are you positive you want to do business? If not, this might be a bad way to make the decision... keep in mind tons of freshman change their majors in college.

Zouman-
Just my personal opinion so take it for what it is worth coming from a stranger...
Unless you are interviewing with a Fortune 500 company or going into the field of IB, something like that and you are comparing one of the "Top 5" business schools with one not in the top 5, I believe that potential employers are going to care almost zip about WHERE you got your degree and more what you did WHILE you were getting it and who YOU ARE and how that comes across in an interview. Again, if YOU like both schools mostly equal from a "where do I see myself living and studying for the next four years" perspective then it makes good sense to be practical from a financial perspective (a good attribute in business) to choose the school that is more cost-effective for you (in this case UMN?).

Think more about the opportunities you want to have available and that you are most likely to take advantage of while you are in school, and less about the sainted "rankings." If you are good at visualization, spend some quiet time visualizing yourself four years from now at each school, think about your debt levels at each and getting similar jobs at the end of school (regardless of field or major) - how do you feel? Was it worth it? Is IU $32,000 better??? Keep in mind that is only the principle portion of the loan - add to that the 8th wonder of the world, compounding interest, and it will end up costing you about $128,000 [someone please correct my figures if I am wrong - compounding interest upsets me so much I just block it out-LOL].

I swear, if I ran the world ALL HS juniors would have to take a class that explained debt and compounding interest BEFORE they entered the application process.

One of D's schools, as part of their FA application process, required them to take an online tutorial about loans, etc. They had a calculator that projected about what a student's salary needed to be at graduation to sustain various debt levels. It was a real eye opener for D when she saw just what kind of salary she would need if she attended some of the schools she was considering, and weighed in the back of her mind when she was deliberating schools.

In the end, only you (and possibly your parents) can decide what makes sense FOR YOU. Hopefully some of what I have said will make you think and help YOU decide for yourself what is right for you.

Best wishes on your decision. :)

i too narrowed my choices to either kelley or carlson. right now i am going ahead with kelley due to the scholarship and the ranking. And money is not that much of a bother for me.

i have read somewhere that if one wants to work in twin cities then carlson is great option. But if one wants to work in other major cities, kelley is the better choice. is this true?

jkjkjkj09......r u oos?? cuz i got 8k and honors college at IU..is tht wut u got? but still its roughly 28k for us next yr

"...right now i am going ahead with kelley due to the scholarship and the ranking."

For what it is worth: Until this thread I'd never heard of Kelley, Carlson on the other hand I've known about for years, even before D started looking at schools. I don't live in MN and I do(and have done) business all over the US and sometimes Canada for 20+ years. So I don't think your info about Kelley giving you more options is true. I am certain that given your performance in college and how you develop into a business person will be your ticket to wherever you decide to go.
