my colege counsler says i should apply to mit because math was my best sat score (660 math, 500 critical reading, 510 writing) but its not like harvard or nothing...right????
but neways do you guys think i will get in?
i'm in the photography club and am cuban and my grades are good and i've already taken 9 AP classes and am taking 6 more next year.
i think i'd rather go to harvard but my counsler says that my sats are better for mit.
i dunno. help me.

Are you kidding? MIT is a great school... It is up there with the likes of Harvard, Princeton and Yale in terms of prestige. But, you shouldn't just apply to MIT because you scored the best on the math section of your SAT. Apply to which ever school fits you best. And no offense, but a 660 on the math section of the SAT isn't too impressive for an MIT applicant. You're going to need to bring those SAT scores up to be competitive at MIT.

... MIT is at Harvard's caliber. Sure stats don't tell the whole story, but a 1670 isn't going to get you in, especially if you're an international. Are you? Regardless though, your chances are pretty dim... but who knows, I may be wrong.

"A 660 isn't too impressive." A 660 isn't impressive at all... I'm confident enough to say that almost all MIT students (99.9%) scored higher than a 660 on the math portion of the SAT.

Um... we might have a troll on our hands, folks... ya think?

Has to be a troll... If this person is not then they have very little chance of getting in, especially if they're asking if MIT is a good school. I know my counselor would tell me to be realistic if I had such a low SAT math score.

the name of "cUbAnPlAyAbOi912" was slightly suspicious

translate?

lol it's his first post ever. doesn't look so good.

No MIT sucks, it's a terrible school. What on Earth are you thinking?

I came to MIT with better scores than a 660 on the math, but i'm looking to transfer out to a state university or to a better technology trade school

MIT is awesome! I don't attend MIT, but it's my dream college. :)

Like other people said, you shouldn't go to MIT just because you scored higher in your math section. That just says you're better in Math than in other subjects.

You should go to MIT because you have a passion for it. If you don't know a lot about MIT, go to their website. I believe their site is very helpful especially with MyMIT. Go to their site and learn about the college. You should go because you want to go, not because your counselor says you should.

River Phoenix:

I wonder why.

someone needs to look at college's SAT average ranges to get things a little bit in perspective. =P

MIT math is not at the same level as Harvard Math.

Harvard Math is a lot more prestigious and selective.

Even though MIT math is 6 times bigger, Harvard Math team consistently place 1st place in Putnam math competition. Harvard math alumni received more Fields Medal, which is the most prestigious math award, than any other school.

No one from MIT ever won Fields medal.

Harvard Alumni also received Nobel Prize more than any other school in US

Oh really. But I wouldnt say MIT math is not on par with Harvard math I would say they are both top math programs.

I mean, think of it dude, MIT math cannot be too shabby since we know all know about MITs great Engineering Programs. Perhaps, Harvard can compete with MIT when it comes to math/soft sciences, considering those programs are located in Arts & Sciences College. However, when it comes to engineering, MIT can blow Harvard off to oblivion.

MIT is Engineering and Engineering is MIT

Rabban, I see from looking at his past posts that mdx is a notorious Harvard troll. Don't even bother trying to reason with him.

Rabban, mdx is just trolling, pay him no mind.

Some of you people are extremely impertinent, for goodness sake it's his first post, and to be completely honest cUbAnPlAyAbOi912 your chances for acceptance are minimal at best. Sorry

You know, I'm not entirely sure mdx is best classified as a Harvard troll -- I think a more accurate description is "anti-MIT and most of the time, when the purposes suit, pro-Harvard".

Not that it changes anything about the futility of reasoning with him.

Actually, I recognize mdx's exact phrasing even... this is not the first time or the first thread in which that exact post has been made.
