Is MSU a safety?

Applying for (Aerospace)Engineering
White Male
Location: Illinois

GPA UW: 3.2, W: 3.6
I came from a less than stellar grade school and I was placed in all regulars classes in both 9th and 10th grade, where I got 2 Cs in PE and 1 in English. From Sophomore year to Junior year I went from all regulars classes to all Honors and 1 AP(Microecon-got a 5) and got all As/Bs.

High School: My current high school is VERY competitive, it's a college prep.
Public, Magnet school, 32nd in state(I we're a lot better than that, but Illinois bases it off of one test that nobody in my school tries on.) I likely only got in it because of my location and where I was coming from.(For statistics purposes)

ACT: 29(33E, 26M, 29R, 28S) It's a little low, especially math, I'm retaking this month.
Class rank: Top 30% (My class size is over 1000 kids.)

Senior Courses:
AP Psychology
AP Human Geography
AP Environmental Science
Honors Pre-Calc
Honors English
Honors Forensic Science
Percussion Band

ECs(weak, I was ignorant, too late now)
Band - only Senior year, section leader
Like 60 hours of volunteer
Tutoring at ethnic heritage centers
LOTS of stuff done at my old elementary school(I elaborated on the whole "giving back" thing in my essay. Also, I'm 3rd generation there)

My essays are awesome, I hired a professional to help.
Hook:My really high upward trend from Sophomore->Junior year->Senior year.

Given my low GPA, is MSU a safety for me?

That last question doesn’t make sense. But because of your low gpa, I’d say you are a match at best

I assumed it would be a safety because although my GPA is a few tenths lower than average, my ACT is 2 points higher than their 75th percentile.

No. A safety is generally if you are in the top 25% for both ACT/SAT and GPA. You’re a match. You’ll probably get in, but (especially depending on when you apply) it is not a safety.

Also, I don’t understand why someone would ever hire a professional to help them with essays. Meh.

A weak GPA is calls for desperate measures. And besides, if I happened to not get in somewhere, I’d hate myself for not taking the opportunity. It’s not like they wrote it for me, but they’re a lot more experienced than some English teacher.

Thanks for the info, though.

edit: I’ll be applying before Nov. 1.

A 3.6 is not a weak GPA by any means.

That’s my weighted GPA, my unweighted is only a 3.2.

Also, I guess I should mention that it barely cost me anything because the lady is a friend of one of my friends who was also getting her help. So it was more of an, “oh here’s some money, help me too.”

I would think the odds are very good that you will get in but because of GPA I would consider MSU at match rather than a safety.

Diesel, if you’re not going to contribute, don’t post unless you’re looking to upset posters.

i think msu is a match for u not a safety. plus me, along with many other of my friends, already heard back from msu and we applied like late sept-early/mid oct and heard back in a week. i heard now that its past nov1 they are judging apps harder and actually heard are deferring quite a lot. so the point is if u havnt applied apply now and ehh pretty much saying its not a safety ;-)
