Is my 680 in Critical Reading keep me out of Penn? HELP!!

Hi, so my first college choice is Upenn. Im applying for the Wharton School next fall. I know this is perhaps the most competitive school at Penn. I'm afraid that my scores are not good enough for Wharton. I did the SAT and got 1890 the first time (R:610, M:620, W:660). I did it one more time and got 2150 (R:680, M:770, W:700). Im afraid that my Reading will harm my application. I am an international student, so english is my second language. Should I retake the SAT? Also, is a 730 in Math 1, 780 Math 2, 750 in Biology M good enough?

Thanks! :)

Bump bump!

I think your scores are good enough, but that’s just me.

Is there another subject test you think you could do well in? It seems silly to send in your 730 in math 1 if you got a 780 in math 2. I think you could get in with your critical reading score, but scoring higher could never hurt, and I think most people take the SAT’s 3 times anyway, so I would work on critical reading and retake them.

thank you for your responses!! i was thinking on retaking the SAT but i really on’t think i could raise my Reading score. perhaps with some luck I could get 730. but that’s only with luck :S Also, Upenn requires me to send all scores so I have to send my Math 1 score. Is it that bad?

Your math 1 isn’t bad, It’s just that you’re sending them 2 math subject tests, and you did better on the more advanced version of the other math subject test. I definitely don’t know this for a fact, but I think when they asked you to send in three subject tests, they didn’t want you to send them 2 subject tests on the same subject. Before you take my advice, and take another subject test, send the admissions office an email or something and ask because I really don’t know what I’m talking about. Everything I say is just an educated guess when it comes to admissions.

I believe that average Wharton SAT score is 2250+, but keep in mind that the SATs are only a small part of the application. Wharton could fill its class many times over with 2350+ applicants.

I got into Wharton with a 680 on the writing portion. I would assume the 680 wouldn’t kill you on the reading section.

I would study a lot this summer. D did a “PennPrep SAT” course when we visited and that helped a lot. Good luck!

If you look at the Penn Common Data set, 39% of the class have a SAT reading score <700.

Unless you are hooked, doubtful you will get into Penn Wharton with those SATs.

Why not take TOEFL instead? Maybe you’d do better on it.

lol this is ridiculous… I’m an international student with what you guys consider a low SAT (710CR 690W 710M) yet I’m confident in my chances for Wharton… Then again I’m north african so I think I’m a minority and I have pretty good ECs. Many students at my school that got accepted to wharton were internationals and Penn knows that the SAT is harder for internationals than it is for americans, especially the Critical Reading section. So no. 680 is not a bad score. you’re in the 93rd percentile… cmon…

I’m not sure if it’s different for Wharton, but I know that at least for CAS Penn only requires 2 subject tests. I ended up sending my Physics and my Math 1 and 2 scores, just because Penn asks for all testing. I doubt it would hurt the OP to submit the subject tests he already has. And to the OP, I have a 670 CR, but I don’t think it’ll hurt me as I had a 2180 superscored, am a URM, and am applying to CAS.

If you have time, by all means, retake the SATs, but don’t let it drive you crazy. There’s more to an application than just test scores.

Ill be knowing in just 10 days! so finally I’ll know if my SAT scores were good enough ;)

“Unless you are hooked, doubtful you will get into Penn Wharton with those SATs.”

And according to common app , the range for Penn is 2030-2285, with 2150 as the average. Are you saying that half the class is “hooked”, as in athletes, legacies…And not all athletes and legacies are idiots, especially legacies.

And watch this if you want further re-assurance that the 680 alone WILL NOT break your application.

@deathblade: Thanks for pointing out the NYTimes article. However, it seems a bit too convenient that the author would swallow the admissions directors’ comments about standardized test scores when he’s creating a NYT course for college admissions that doesn’t involve SAT prep.
