<p>I think he might have meant if you get 60% on the MC, you'd better get close to perfect on the free response in order to get a 5. And imo free response is harder.</p>
<p>AP exams typically require 65% to 75% for a 5, depending on the curve. It's nowhere near 85%.</p>

<p>Yeah, but getting 85%ish is completely reasonable, and by doing so you put yourself in position to waltz into an easy 5, as opposed to squeaking by and possibly dropping down to a 4.</p>
