I want to apply to a good portion of reach schools (think top 20, a few ivies, idk) and I’m not sure if my art is good enough for a supplement… To my understanding, a few schools require you mail a hard copy to them, and it’s a lot of work if my art isn’t on par with some of these other applications, haha!
I’m not planning on majoring in art or anything similar to art, but art is a big part of my ECs! I’ve never had professional training except for like one introduction course that I needed to graduate high school, haha, and so I’ve never entered any competitions or really shown many people… not sure if I’m “good enough” to submit or if it’d just be a waste of time, you know?
Here is some of my stuff I happen to have on my computer, idk if I’ll be submitting THESE things but it gives you a feel of my art:
The last few graphics are designs I made for clubs for t-shirts and stuff.
From what I’ve been told, the art supplement doesn’t really do much to improve/hurt your application, but if it’s gonna help my application or make the adcoms hesitate to admit someone with heavy “art” ECs, it’d be nice to know! Thanks again for any help! If anyone has submitted art supplements before, I’d love to know what kind of “art” most impress the art departments at competitive schools. Thanks
((Also some of my stats: asian female, 4.0 UW/4.8W, 2130 SAT (gonna take a second time) and lots of art/community service ec’s))
Your work is amazing! I would submit the supplement.
My kid chose to only submit her supplements at about half her schools, and for those she didn’t get in, was left wondering If she could have done more.
Some of the ivys discourage sending supplements, but in reality, they aren’t going to reject you based on being annoyed that they have to look at a high quality supplement. It probably has little benefit, but there isn’t really a downside unless you send something embarrassing. Your work is very strong.
I don’t know enough about art to say anything beyond “Those are super cool!” but I’mma put in a plug for a national contest that may interest you. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are currently open for submissions (http://www.artandwriting.org/).
While your art looks absolutely amazing, I would ask the art teacher at your school and show him/her your work and have the teacher decide whether its good enough for Ivy-League schools.
I also agree with an above poster. Attend some competitions and see how your artwork fares there to get an idea of where you stand among the other artistically talented high-school students.
I have no artistic training and can’t comment on your artwork. If you are not planning on an art major I don’t think your artwork will have a huge impact on your application. So at talented an artist as you may be, please don’t apply to mostly reach schools. You need to have a good mix of reach, match and safety schools that you would be happy attending so you are sure to have good choices in the end.
Your art is good enough to submit, but in the future, I’d strongly recommend you resist the urge to place a large signature on your paintings. Dates, too. Just resist.
@tylerss, I agree with others that your work is extremely strong. I particularly like the skull study.
My son is a talented artist (though much younger) and has been doing programs for 6 years through a major art college. Your work looks to me to be portfolio or early college quality. I think it is definitely work submitting.
I second @bodangles’ comment about applying to the Scholastic Arts & Writing awards, which are currently open for submissions:
They also have examples of winning works, so you can compare your work to what has done well in the past. For example, here are some of the drawing winners:
I looked into the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards and I think I’m too late They are currently accepting submissions, but it looks like I won’t be notified if I DO win until January (which might be too late to put the title on any of my applications, haha)
I looked and wow a lot of the submissions are impressive! In my state however, there aren’t many visual art submissions for me to compare to (most are performance/etc), but of those I’ve seen I think I have an okay shot if I start working on something great!
I might submit just for fun, to see if I win anything. I actually just remembered I did win an award for a local art competition held by Blick for their 100 year anniversary, but I don’t think that is as impressive as Scholastic.
Question: If I do submit to the Scholastic competition and DO win, can I still add that to my application late? I’m sorry I don’t know much about college admissions Thank you for the help!
Yes, you can always send an email later on and update admissions officers of anything important you’ve done since you sent in your app!
Having entered for three years myself, a national win of any type – gold, silver, whatever – would be very noteworthy. Those are released in March. In January, use your judgment to see if your result is worth sending to colleges. For example, if I entered four pieces and got back one silver key and three honorable mentions, I wouldn’t consider that important enough to tell them about. For four golds, or three golds and one silver, or maybe even two/two, I would probably update them.
