I thought that I'd have another chance at Berkeley when I went to community college. I took 4 classes at CC in High School and got 2 A's and 2 B's. Only 1 of those A's count on my UC GPA. Unfortunately now, I got a B in a lab class. Now I have 3 B's and it isn't even my first semester. I'm so frustrated and unmotivated now; all I wanted to do was get into Berkeley, and unfortunately, I feel that my hard work and effort was a waste. I still have 2 more finals to do, and one I'm positive I'll have an A, and another I don't even know, maybe even /another/ B if my final falls through. What am I going to do? Are my chances basically over before I even have a chance?
The major I chose isn't impacted (Linguistics), and I guess I have other options such as UCSC and UCSB.

Don’t give up now, taking CC classes in high school was a good thing. Getting Bs is a far better thing than getting Cs, and you’ve just about finished your first semester.

Chill out man. It’ll be ok!

It depends how long you chose to stay at your CC, and how many courses you plan on taking. You could still have a fairly solid GPA with a few B’s. Don’t put so much pressure on yourself. Just try your best and if it’s meant to happen it will happen.

Next semester I plan on taking 12 units, unfortunately only 7 are transferrable since I’m in remedial math. I’ll have 30 by the end of the school year, but I’ll have 36-40 by the time I apply for Fall 2012. I mean, I wanted to take 2 years to get out of CC (which is why I took classes in HS) but if I have to take 3 in order to get a 3.6+ I’ll do it. I know I sound like I’m pressuring myself, I probably am but I worked realllyyy hard this semester and I feel like that B wasn’t a reflection of my hard work at all.

Yea, that’s why I said you can’t hate yourself for having a B! I have no idea how the 4.0 GPA guys do it because in 2-3 years you will run into one of those professors. Sometimes, there’s no pleasing them (or they have a faulty spreadsheet), or you get sick, or God only knows what, and your grade turns out to not be as good as it could’ve been had you taken it with someone else.

I’ve seen some people do anything to keep their GPA up, try not to be one of those people, as I said it’s way too early to be worrying about this sort of thing and you will probably end up getting better grades in harder classes where it matters anyway.

Please don’t hate yourself for getting a B. However, I want you to know that getting a 4.0 while getting out of CC in 2 years is a possibility. It’s not easy, I just finished up 18 units (and hopefully kept my 4.0 GPA this semester). I had to do so because I’m transferring next fall but believe me I’ve had very little of a life since I graduated high school in '09. I don’t want to say it depends on how bad you want it, but hard work is a big part of it. B’s should not deter your goals though! For some school comes easier and if you’re trying your hardest, when you apply to Berkeley next Fall, show them how hard you’ve worked! Remember, although GPA is the biggest deciding factor, it’s not the only one. Make sure to focus on completing all possible prerequisites and take part in EC’s that pertain to your major. Choose it early because if you can show them how passionate you are about it, you’ll have a much greater chance. You’re already doing great and remember, grade trends work wonders! It’s way too early for you to give up. :)

your chances are far from over. Grades are important but you don’t need to have a perfect 4.0 GPA. Just try your best - and it seems like you have been doing that so far.

You still have a chance - especially considering it is your FIRST semester!! Relax and don’t worry so much about the B’s.
