hi all, im applying for a univ, and for a questino that asked what you did for fun, will it sound stupid if i say playign starcraft? b/c i do that alot, even though im so bad at it. or could i say playing/arguing with my sister and stuffed toys, because i do that too, but will they tink im lying, arg this is so stressful.....

Go with the playing starcraft and then elaborate why it interests you

The thing is, a lot of people play Starcraft, so I’d be wary of writing the essay on it if you didn’t already have a lot of solid extracurriculars like a sport or something, or else admissions officers would think you weren’t really passionate about doing something productive and just spent all your time outside of school and homework playing video games…I would really be careful about writing an essay on that. As for the sisters-toys one, it would entirely depend on how sophisticated it came off on paper.

No matter which subject you pick, admissions officers are going to glance at it lightly and go, ‘is this the kind of person we want on campus?’. You want to write about a subject that’s really made you who you are, and starcraft just doesn’t seem like deep material–but then again, it depends on how you play out the idea.

^i second that

Starcraft will be kind of overdone because let’s be real sc2 just came out and alot of people are gonna have that in their head.
I’d only write about games if you have something really significant to say about it, like a realization about _____ or if that was like your outlet for _______
Get what I’m saying?
A great piece of advice I got was that “Any topic can be done, it just depends on how you give it your own personal spin and the perspective you take”.
It’s over done, but just be you. If starcraft is all about you, and you can write something intelligent with a point about you, by all means go for it

I’d try another topic. I went to an info session recently and I quote “we are looking to see that students are doing something in their spare time besides playing video games” - lets face it some people love video games, but often they are frowned upon as a waste of time by adults

My friend’s brother wrote his personal statement about Starcraft I (Not kidding) and is attending Stanford right now. I’m not sure how he went about talking about it, but yea i guess this topic works and def will spark interest to admissions officers

it all depends how you write it. you can make it seem intellectual or trashy.
