Is my journey over?

Hello Everyone,

I have been a frequent lurker of college confidential for a while now and after noticing the helpfulness of this community I thought I should give it a chance with my own post.

Well, the reason for my post is I need advice, lots of it. I graduated HS in '09 and have been attending a very good cc in NJ on and off for the past two to three years now. When I started in Fall '09 things were going well, I took 4 classes and finished with one A, two Bs, and a C. Next semester I took classes again and received 4 Cs. This is when things took a turn for the worst. Basically, long story short, my parents got divorced and I was put in the position of choosing sides. I couldn't handle all the fighting anymore so I made a decision, I would live with neither of them. I packed my bags, booked a flight, and went to live with my uncle in Africa. This experience I would say was the best and worst time of my life. Being with my uncle, a doctor in a non profit organization, revealed to me my true passion in life, medicine. The negative aspect of this was I had naively forgotten that I had registered for classes for the spring '10 and due to my lack of proper withdrawal from those classes I received 4 Fs. When I returned to school last summer I explained my situation to the counselor but she advised me it was a "lost cause". During the summer I took two classes, English Comp I and II and got two As. By this point I had changed my major to Bio and began to take some of the core requirements needed. Fall '11 I took General Bio 1, General Chem 1, Calc 1 and General Physics which I received 4 As. This semester I am taking Bio II, Chem II, Calc II, and Physics II. I expect to finish with either 4As or 3 As and a high B.

In conclusion, if my problem isn't too apparent to everyone, my gpa is still horrible. Those 4 F's have really put me in a bad situation. To add on to this situation, my dad who is highly against me going to my current school, has informed me if I dont transfer within the year I will need to find a new place to live.
I guess what im really asking do I have any shot to transfer to any good schools? ( Bu, NYU, Villanova, Fordham) Villanova is my #1
My current GPA is a
SAT- 2200
Ec's- bio club, volunteering, raised $15k for a surgery for a young boy in africa

So here is my opinion, which may or may not be worth anything to you.
I would take the chance and apply to the schools you want to go to. Write some really great essays, get some great recommendation letters, and attempt in every way possible to eloquently explain what you just put in your post here. At the same time I would attempt to accumulate the max credits that you can transfer to the schools you want to go to, probably 60 or something like that, make sure that the 60 is in addition to all the classes you got bad grades in that you are not happy with. Then assuming that you get accepted since you can only transfer so many credits and assuming that the school you end up at does not also transfer your GPA (some do, some do not) then you should be all set. Your journey is not over, you have not reached your destination. While your GPA may throw some twists into the journey, and while you may need to cast a wider net in regards to the schools you would like to attend just to cover yourself, if you are determined you will and can find a way to get where you want to go, you might just have to work for it harder than if you had a great GPA. Plus your journey may hold more weight in the eyes of and admissions officer, assuming you can tell your story or plight.
