As much as I dislike saying it, not going to Princeton, Upenn, or Cornell for undergraduate school is not nearly the end of the world. So relax.

@mechrocks my intended major is english literature or psychology. So I don’t know, maybe the “ok/half decent” math/science GPA won’t hurt me as much as it would if I were to go into say, engineering.
cortana431 - I know, but I really want to go there I just can’t let the dream die…
you know, after I saw that I got a C for my semester grade, I said “well, that does it for me. Guess I’ll have to look into UConn or CUNY or something” and when I fixated myself on that, I felt a whole lot better. My days weren’t as stressful. Then I gradually eased myself back into the Ivy League thing, and now I just can’t let it go…

Please stop bumping this thread it clutters the board. Either you get comments to your liking or you don’t so please refrain from reposting this thread and bumping it every couple of hours.

If you want to do English you should be looking at Williams and Amherst.

Anyway, as for as the thread goes, you’re within range, but no one can give you a definitive answer. Your response is hilarious though.

thanks for the suggestions majoreco. I’ll check out those schools.

you have an upward trend in grades. If your ec were strong i think you should have applied for RD or ED and if you got denied then took a gap year… that would have shown persistence.

There’s more to an application than grades (yours are fine anyway); but you should really focus on aspects of your application when the time comes. It seems a bit early for you now.

I didn’t apply yet, I’m just taking a gap year so I can get my recs from National Geographic. I had to save up the money myself so that I could go on an expedition with NatGeo, and it took a while (past graduation.) So I figure that if I wait a year and go on the expedition, then I’ll have the recs which I feel will really help my chances.

What are my chances if I apply ED?

@islander thanks! also note that I struggled with depression/ocd during my freshman/sophomore years but managed to overcome it…should I write about that in my essay?

NatGeo EC sounds really good, but ur taking a gap year would make sense only if u are not sure about ur present EC’s.

thanks mech. National Geographic is one of the strongest ECs…so I want to make sure that I have (a) rec(s) from them.

U didn’t take subject tests?

oh yeah, sorry I forgot to put that in.

literature: 770, spanish: 750, USH: 720

you stand a very healthy chance at cornell. your stats are just fine.

your life is definitely not over even if you don’t get into cornell.

in case you get rejected by cornell - count yourself lucky and go somewhere else. there are many fine schools out there that are just as good, if not better, than cornell in many respects

relax and don’t stress about this kind of thing. life will figure itself out in future as long as you’re working hard.

more than your grades, it’s your class rank that really matters. even if you get one C here and there, as long as you’re in top 5% of your class, you’re good to go.

hey thanks lazykid! When I saw your username, I knew it sounded familiar…so when I looked at your posts I remembered that you posted on that “So you want to go to Princeton…” thread. Just wanted to say that I loved your posts when I read them. That other guy was such a jerk and couldn’t handle being wrong!

I do feel better now and I need to stop worrying. Also, Lazykid… wouldn’t Cornell just care more about final grades than semester grades? I mean my school doesn’t send EOY/final grades…just semester 1 and 2 grades…which sucks because if they did send final grades, my transcript would look like this:

Soph:
Honors Chem: A
Spanish II (Honors not available): A
Honors World History: A
Honors American Literature: A
Religion: A
Psychology: A
Geometry: B

because 2.0+4.0/2 = 3.0 = B as final grade… and 3.5+4.5/2 = 4.0 = A as final grade for honors chem.

ehhh who cares anyway. I know of someone who got in with 4 C’s and even more B’s.

Oh yeah and my school doesn’t rank.

Your life is never over , because of grades !

Honest question; why are you going to Cornell? What is at Ithaca, NY, that makes you so eager to go there?

This is an excellent question that deserves to be answered, not just by OP but by many thousands of others who apply to Cornell.

Looking back, I liked most of what Cornell had to offer, except its awful location and weather. To prospective students: be warned.

I honestly think your grades are fine. Btw, what is your class rank? If you are ranked top 5-10% of your class, that should be sufficient. Having few B’s here and there won’t hurt you much.

No worries upennvetgirl. I believe most love Cornell’s location - a gorgeous campus in a wonderful college town. The weather is no worse than other northeastern/midwest campuses.

"Btw, what is your class rank? <<< My school doesn’t rank whatsoever, so I have no idea lol. There’s this one girl that I’m extremely jealous of…she got straight A’s all 4 years. But she’s not applying to any of the Ivies. She’s staying in Florida and going to something like USF/UCF/UF. I don’t think that anyone from my class is applying to the Ivies. Most if not all end up going to state schools in our homestate or Johns Hopkins. We’ve had like 2 go to Ivies since our school’s opening…2003.

And futuredoctor, that is a good question. I do need to think about that some more. I’m actually a big fan of cold/rainy/depressing weather so Ithaca shouldn’t be a problem for me. Also, their English dept. is within the top 20 if I remember correctly. It just looks like a nice place. I’m willing to do anything to get out of this dreaded state…

Also, I wasn’t NMSF/NMF…but I was an AP Scholar with Distinction. Does this matter much? What’s better, NM or AP Scholar w/ Distinction/National AP Scholar?
