Well, actually that’s not true. Med school admissions is based on GPA and the MCAT. While I would not recommend going to a subpar school, you certainly don’t have to go to a highly competitive school to get into med school. In fact, if your GPA is lower in a highly competitive school, you might have more difficulty getting into medical school than you would have had you attended a less competitive school and done better.
@midatlmom Thank you, this is incredibly useful. I have only ever looked at the top schools because I honestly thought they would give me a better chance at getting into a good med school than a state school for example. I will probably have to start a new college search.

Because if I go somewhere less expensive, there is a good chance the quality of my education won’t be the same and won’t I have even less of a chance to get into med school if I don’t go to a top school ?

Absolutely not. Med schools don’t care where you went for undergrad. Most med students went to state schools.
Med schools are “stats driven”…GPA and MCAT scores are what matter.
You don’t want to go to some podunk school, but a state’s top 2-3+ schools would be absolutely fine.
You don’t want to go where your stats are average. You want to go where your stats are strong. You don’t want to get weeded out.
And, all US MD schools are very good. This country doesn’t have any “so so” MD med schools. (I can’t comment on DO schools because I’m not familiar with them).
OP, is there a reason UMass isn’t on your list?
@NavalTradition To be truthful, it’s because I hate the weather (Winter is the worst here if you have bad asthma like I do) I told myself I would only endure the weather if I got into Harvard/Northeastern, but it seems as though I need to rethink that decision.
