Is my mistake detrimental?

If there is a simple error on a resume, will it be detrimental in admissions decisions? For example, I accidentally wrote “2017” instead of “2016” for my graduation year. Would this greatly hurt me? I feel so stupid for not catching my error. I am very worried about this and cannot believe I overlooked it.

Get that corrected right away.

I clearly wrote 2016 on every other document, it’s just on my resume that I wrote 2017 on accident. Are you saying I should call the school and let them know my error?

…Yes? Your year of graduation is a very important fact. I wouldn’t leave any potential confusion.

I will call the office on Monday. Do you think this will hurt my decision? Besides that, my application is very strong.

Mistakes happen. It won’t affect your decision but it may be in the wrong year. Just let them know about it and you’ll be fine.

I had a mistake on my resume - typed “hosted” instead of “participated in” (as I was planning an event that was later cancelled) so I just e-mailed the school and got it cleared up.

Luckily, on common app, my transcripts, and everything else, my graduation year is clearly 2016. I’ll call Monday but I don’t think it’s a huge deal because it was only incorrect on my resume.

So will this affect my admissions decision in the slightest? (If I contact them?)

I agree with Erin’s Dad – it won’t make them think badly on you or anything. I would just want to clear up a potential source of errors or misunderstandings, that’s all.

Thanks everyone. Would it be better to call them or send an email?

Just send an email. A paper trail is always good when communicating non-time sensitive information to an office that is inundated with both calls and documentation at this moment. And this isn’t going to matter one iota.

Update: I called the school and they said not to worry about it, they do not pay much attention to the resume and adcoms would check my transcript if there was any confusion. Just in case, I sent an email with my mistake and got a response later that day saying that the information was corrected
