Is my PSAT Score applicable for the National Merit Scholarship?

I am going for commended and I found out that I got a 1400. I live in NJ; do you think I can get the scholarship for being commended?

What are your individual math and EBRW scores?

It looks like your 1400 converts to a 210 (using 700 as both reading and math scores). You can get a more accurate number when you plug in your own scores, but I just chose 700 for each. The commended cutoff is around a 211 but there are some articles I read saying the number could increase by one point or so. New Jersey has a very high cutoff for National Merit Semifinalist/Finalist, but if I’m not mistaken Commended is nationally based. You might be able to squeeze into the Commended group.

Art Sawyer over at Compass Prep thinks that the commended might go up a point to 212. Whether it’s 210, 211, or 212 - we will all know a lot more come March or April when NMSC begins notifying schools as to who is “moving on” in the competition.

OP, you willl need to look up your Selection Index, which is part of your PSAT score report. A 1400 may be fine or it may not. Everything depends on the EBRW and Math subscores. Post them here if you need more clarification.

BTW, Commended is not associated with a scholarship from NMSC, but some schools may view you favorably for being a Commended Scholar and so give you institutional merit aid.
