Is my SAP appeal letter written well enough?

RE: SAP Appeal Explanation Statement

Statement of Appeal:

I’m writing this letter in regard to my financial aid suspension. At the time of my poor academics in question I found out my dad, who was in Indonesia since the beginning of my Spring 2016 semester, had health problems but wasn’t sure what was wrong until late August. Not only was I concerned about his health, but the fact he was in a third world country with terrible medical care caused me stress over his poor condition. Due to his contract, he was not allowed to back home to get the proper medical care until his allotted time was up. For the past 4 months he struggled with his health and was diagnosed with (Congestive Heart Failure) which in terms caused me great stress throughout the semester. My dad returned back to states on Dec.2 and on December 5 was admitted into ICU for which hindered my ability to study for my finals during that week.

Achieving Satisfactory Progress:

Now that my father is back at home where he can get the care he needs for his illness, I feel that I will not have to stress and worry about his health now. I am confident that I will be able to improve my academic progress by making an change with time management using the assignment planner on the Valdosta website to keep me on track. I will also while maintain a higher GPA by making effective use of the student success center’s workshops and speaking with my professors regularly for any extra help that is needed.

Thank you for you Consideration

  1. Read your letter again. It has a number of grammatical errors that need to be fixed.
  2. I see that you say you will use student support services. If I were reading this letter, I would wonder why you didn't do so in the term in question.
  3. How far below the cutoff for SAP are you? That doesn't need to be in your letter, but did you fail all,of your courses, or are you 0.1 points too low.

Don’t use the term “third world” as this is now considered pejorative. Also, can you substitute “terrible” with “substandard”?

i was 0.4 points too low and I passed all my classes this sememster

Passed with a C or passed with a D.

C and above

did you use any student resources THIS term? If so, list those. If not…why?

Most schools want to know what the student has DONE already and will continue to do!

So is your dad really better now? You just mentioned he was in intensive care with heart failure on Dec. 5. Contrary to what you say in the first sentence of the last paragraph, I assume you will still worry and be stressed. I would say instead that while you still are concerned about his health, knowing that he is getting better care will allow you to better focus on your studies in the next semester.

okay I’ve added that i did take a tutoring program in the student success center

he is much better now but still not fully recovered

This is after my edits:

Fix the sentence. Can you spot the error?
and, fix these sentences:

This will be unacceptable to the Financial aid team. You were having personal family problems with your father’s congestive heart failure and your grades were tanking, yet, you were NEVER able to verbalize this information to any of your professors or GA’s via email? text? department notes?

Scheduling conflicts affected your ability to email?

I agree w @“aunt bea” . That part about the “scheduling conflicts” sounds really lame. Leave it out.

Also, don’t start the letter with, “I’m writing this letter in regard to…”. It’s superfluous. Just get to the point already and say something like:

“I wish to appeal the suspension of my financial aid.”

I edited those sentences. Is there any other things i should mention or leave out?

Be prepared to supply documentation of your father’s medical condition & treatment, when asked.

I wish to appeal the suspension of my financial aid. Due to his contract, he was not allowed to travel back home to get the proper medical care until his allotted time was up. For the past 4 months he struggled with his health and was finally diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure. My father returned back to the U.S. on Dec.2 and on December 5 was admitted into the ICU for his condition. With such horrible news I was unable to properly study my finals during that week.
