Hi everyone,
I have a 2230 (digression: superscored, but that makes no difference. i talked to a Harvard admissions rep and they say they don't care at all) and I'm applying to HYP.

Math: 710
CR: 720
Writing:800 )
Essay: 12 ) not concerned about this

I'm honestly concerned that these scores are too low.. I only have a 1430/1600, and the math is tormenting me. When practicing, I can score consistent 780s-800s, but when I take the test, I get so nervous and make the stupidest mistakes (even like adding wrong on a calculator, somehow...). I'm taking the June SAT slot for subject tests and probably the October one for the Math II, but that leaves no room to retake the test. I'm just concerned that, when applying to these schools, my scores won't be looked upon favorably.

I do have amazing ECs, I'll admit that; I started an international charity which has branches in top private schools here in America, and love art and have been exhibited several times. I took the chem SAT 2 and got a 750 and am hoping for a similar score for US History and math II, and got a 5 on AP World (took 5 more exams this year, hoping for similar scores) Do you guys think this score is too low, though? Thanks everyone!

From what I have read about Harvard admissions, Harvard does give more weight to the writing score than do most schools. Still, you have an okay composite scores out of 2400, but your CR + M is still low, and your score appears unbalanced. I would say that you should aim for 750+ on each section, but don’t let that interfere with activities and other work.

If you’re going to get accepted by HYP and the like, it’s not going to be on the basis of your test scores. On the flip side, if you get rejected, it’s also unlikely to be bases on your test scores. Focus more on you the individual. These are highly selective schools that look for a diverse class. What might get you in one year may get you rejected the next year. You haven’t listed your GPA and course rigor, which are probably more important than test scores.

great, thanks!!! i have a 4.0 UW with 6 AP Classes and mostly the rest honors. I hope that’ll make up for it. Like I know the scores aren’t terrible, but they definitely aren’t the best out there. I just don’t know if I could get them up though- my goal score was initially a 2000 LOL

Let’s superscore together! Let me have your Math and you can have my CR (770). Anyways… your SAT is average for HYP, so it will not be a major factor.

If you get rejected, it almost certainly won’t be simply because of your test scores; likewise, if you get accepted, it won’t be because of your test scores. Though your CR and M scores are on the lower end of the spectrum, I’d argue that they aren’t low enough to be disqualifying.

Good luck on the SAT subject tests, and enjoy your senior year. Don’t let college applications stress you out too much! :)

Although your scores will not automatically count you out, they definitely will not help you. If you have other aspects of your application that are awesome (essays, recs, etc.), Harvard is still possible, but your SAT does you no favors.

yeah i figured that. i took precautions early to make sure every other part of my app would be better early. honestly im just happy that i even got scores remotely like these because my initial goal was for a 2000 lol. thanks though!
