Yes. 22nd public school in the nation is certainly challenging.

cool....
I'm both happy and depressed at the same time...
lol
happy cuz adcoms will know this , but depressed b/c it's challenging...

thanks!

Um... 22nd according to what ranking? The Newsweek one based on AP/IB scores? No, that doesn't make your school challenging.

If you told us the name of your school then some people could probably offer more specific information.

There are a lot of misguided lists of top schools. The best indicator is average SAT score. Using old, 1000 is an average school, 1200 is a good school, close to 1400 for a really top school.

my school avg. SAT is 1196 about 1200 general
i don't know where the ranking's from...
Washington Post?... dunno
the school administrators were really proud

lol...
Thomas Jefferson HS for Science and Technology.. their SOPHOMORE avg. SAT is 1400... lol...

theoneo, what kind of ranking says how challenging a school is?

My High School's average SAT score is 940. Will UIUC/UW-Seattle respect my 420v/720m score? :(

do school ranks affect a student's SAT score at all?

I only thought school rank (therefore challenging) would affect the GPA

Sounds like a school in Fairfax County

which one?
TJ?

I dont go to FCPS, but if I had to guess I would say a school in the Reston, Herndon, Chantilly, Fairfax area. No school ranks dont affect SATs

Yes, the quality of the school counts. There is a huge difference between being ranked first at Thomas Jefferson and at Elizabeth High. Plus, some schools don't rank (woohoo!). This is because adcoms evaluate how well you utilized the resources available to you. If you don't do much in your community but they know that there are several opportunities offered directly by your school, they won't look too favorably at your application. Also, if they know your school is very competitive, they will respect your grades much more.

that sucks that a 90-93 is only a B+ ...

so how do you know if you school's competitive or challenging?

when CCers say most rigorous courses, how many APs do they mean?

thanks all!
