Is My Spider Essay's Topic Detrimental?

So, I submitted my application for UR, and have since been somewhat concerned with my “Tell us about spiders” essay submission. Admittedly unique, my essay was more honest and impulsive that I’d like to admit, focusing on my childhood fear and perception of spiders rather than the symbol of hope and opportunity that the animal stands for as a proud representative of such a great school (or something along those lines). Do you think such a topic would be appreciated as unique and interesting (assuming it’s well-written), or do you think it would be off-putting?

From what I have read, they appreciate any unique spin on it…I mean, think about it, they read tens of thousands of these things…anything that makes you stand out is good, at least I think so. My D is applying ED2 in a couple of days & working on this same essay. She is trying a different approach as well but it has been difficult.

That’s fine. I know of at least one current student who wrote their essay on overcoming their fear of spiders.

@cloudysmom I definitely hope that’s the case; otherwise, I’m out of luck (:
Best of luck for your D - I hope her spin on it works out!

@guineagirl96 That’s definitely reassuring. I was hoping that breaking the mold in some way would be a boost if anything, so I’m glad others have had luck with it.

No worries. My D who is a Richmond scholar wrote about how terrifying and disgusting spiders are. They are looking for how well your essay is written and how unique it is. You’ll be fine.

Good luck

My D got accepted ED, we think it must have been her very unique essay as her scores weren’t even in the middle 50% although her w gpa was above it & she had quite a few AP classes. Who knows!
