Is my topic too cliche or not interesting enough? - Common App Essay Prompt #3

Prompt 3 - "Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?"

I want to write about the time when I began to challenge my family (father in particular) about their political beliefs. I had always just agreed with their conservative views, but during the 2012 election I began to actively form my own ideas and challenge the views of my father. I didn't like the idea of being an "ignorant sheep" and blindly following the status quo, so I decided to become informed and develop my own ideas. I would make the decision again because it has caused me to stop taking things at face-value and look beyond the often heavily veiled media (among other things) to determine the truth for myself.

Any thoughts? Is it a problem to write about politics? (I won't be promoting a viewpoint - just the idea that there is immense value in developing your own views and how it impacted me in other areas). Too boring? If it helps, I'm applying to some selective and pretty liberal colleges so I don't know if my topic choice will be factor.

I don’t think the topic choice can hurt you…what matters is how you write, not what you write. Make it as interesting as possible and repeatedly hit on how it has affected you. And I think your idea is good. Try it on for size, and if it still doesn’t feel right, then try another topic or another prompt. All the best!
