is new haven a dump?

<p>I keep hearing this, but have never had any chance to visit. Right now it's my 1st choice to do a PhD, but I'm worried by what the town's like. </p>

<p>Is it as bad as people say? Is there anything to do there? What are costs like? Is it safe? Also, how's the public transport?</p>

<p>I don't really want to move to a new country and spend 5 years living somewhere awful.... I don't mind small towns- i tend to prefer them to cities- but still I like having something to do. A few places doing live music, a cinema, theatre etc</p>

<p>oh and what about Yale Campus?</p>

<p>Im from a town right outside of New Haven and I could tell you this it is not bad at all. Sure there are some very shady areas, but other then that it is very culturally alive. There are all sorts of cultural things to do like go to listen to the New Haven Symphony, go to the Schubert Theater, or movies at York Square cinema. Its a really great place to spend your college years, and just life in general.</p>
